5 Organizations That Celebrate & Promote Science

From the chemistry that's used to create medicine to the biology that makes modern agriculture possible, science influences the lives of everyone on the planet. If humanity is going to continue discovering new things and improving life through innovation, it's important to spread an appreciation for science in adults and children alike. If you think this is an important mission, consider supporting the five organizations listed here. This video was made with Ezvid Wikimaker.

The History of the Scientific Revolution

In Depth

We live in a physical world and it is science that opens that world to us and allows us to discover and explore its mysteries and delights. Helping introduce that wonder to the world are a variety of non-profit groups who take seriously their mission to be ambassadors of science. Here are five organizations, in no particular order, who are taking on the challenge to celebrate and promote science, both in the classrooms as well as in the community.

Starting off our list at #1 is B.S.C.S. Originally founded as Biological Sciences Curriculum Study, the mission of B.S.C.S. Science Learning is to transform science teaching and learning through research-driven innovation. B.S.C.S. is now recognized as a national leader in research, leadership development, continuing education for teachers, and of course, instructional materials.

In order for teachers to be successful in the classroom, they must have access to high quality instructional materials. B.S.C.S leverages research and through robust market testing and evaluation, they produce highly interactive materials that are available online to meet the needs of increasingly diverse student populations. They also offer an online Professional Institute for science teachers to increase student engagement and learning and for teachers to increase their familiarity with the Next Generation Science Standards.

Coming in at #2 is The Story Collider. Since 2010, The Story Collider has been crafting stories about science and sharing them weekly through their podcast and also through their events around the world. These shows feature science storytellers of all types - doctors, engineers and researchers but also poets, patients and comedians. Whether the stories are heart-breaking or hilarious, they are all true and very personal.

Every year The Story Collider produces between 50 and 60 live events featuring more than 250 stories in total. Over 100 of these stories get shared via their weekly podcast. Believing in the power of story, their corporate and university workshop program teaches scientists how to use narrative. Because everyone has a story to tell how science has impacted them, The Story Collider is always looking for new and exciting stories that are personal and can be told in ten minutes or less.

#3 on the list is the Science Center, a mission-driven non-profit organization that helps bring world-changing technologies to market. Based in Philadelphia, they provide innovators, entrepreneurs and companies at any stage of the business lifecycle with support and access to resources, programming, capital, and space - helping move innovation from idea to IPO, and beyond.

The Science Center maintains a collaborative space called Quorum where they offer professional development and entrepreneurial support programs that facilitate connections, foster collaboration and help innovators turn flashes of inspiration into thriving businesses. In addition, their FirstHand program harnesses the knowledge and resources of the Science Center to offer interactive programming to local youth, teachers and professionals from under-resourced schools.

Our choice for #4 is Science from Scientists. The goal of S.F.S. is to ensure that American youth are competitive globally in the field of science by offering exciting, informative and engaging training by practicing scientists. Their lesson topics address many of the Next Generation Science Standards, as well as other state standards in their focus regions of California, Massachusetts and Minnesota. More than 9000 students and 300 teachers benefit from their scientist-led curriculum and the professional development they offer to teachers.

Science from Scientists maintains an active outreach program through their activity booths and module presentations at community events. Their Science Theater and STEM-themed workshops offer exciting hands-on activities and the opportunity to meet real scientists. Their website offers science experiments and family activities that open the world of science to both adults and children. As a non-profit, S.F.S. provides opportunities for both financial donors as well as volunteers to get involved.

Rounding out the list at #5 is the Chemical Education Foundation. The goal of C.E.F. is to inspire students, engage educators and strengthen communities to build a better world through the science of chemistry. C.E.F. does this primarily through their award-winning "You Be the Chemist" programs.

Realizing that the bulk of science education targets students in high school and beyond, C.E.F turns this around by partnering with volunteers to empower students from kindergarten through eighth grade so that a passion for chemistry and science-related careers can be ignited much earlier in life. Students who participate in "You Be The Chemist" report that they are more interested in S.T.E.M. careers, more aware of chemistry's role in daily life, and more confident in their ability to understand chemistry.
