6 Compassionate Organizations Dedicated To Rescuing Dogs

While you may love your pets, there are some dogs who have never known a loving home. These organizations are looking to change that, taking care of abandoned and stray dogs, connecting them with foster families, and finding forever homes so they can be loved and cared for. In Depth

Dogs are man's best friends. All canine owners know that these animals have the potential to bring incredible joy into our lives. Unfortunately, many cities and countries throughout the world have huge populations of strays that are not properly cared for. In no particular order, here are six organizations that are dedicated to rescuing these strays and giving them the lives they deserve.

First up we have the Sato Project at #1. This group is dedicated to rescuing abused and abandoned dogs from Puerto Rico. They work primarily in the municipality of Yabucoa. Located on the southeastern coast of the island, this municipality has consistently ranked as one of Puerto Rico's poorest, and over half of its population is below the federal poverty line.

The Sato Project rescues its animals primarily from Dead Dog Beach, a largely isolated area where island inhabitants drop off unwanted dogs. The group investigates any new canines that appear on the beach, coordinates vet care, and then ships them off to the United States. Once animals arrive, they are brought into foster care or adopted into forever homes.

Next up at #2 we have Bama Bully Rescue, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating pit bull ambassadors within the state of Alabama. They work with animal shelters to rescue pit bulls and similar breeds that are at risk of euthanasia. In addition to placing animals in foster care, they also work to educate the public about the true nature of this breed by offering advice on training, behavior and healthcare.

Bama Bully Rescue is a volunteer-run organization. They do not have a central location or kennel. Instead they work with foster home volunteers and shelters throughout the state in order to give pit bulls a chance to find a forever home. They are a member of the Pit Bull Rescue Alliance, a coalition of organizations that are dedicated to rescuing this misunderstood breed and providing advocacy and education to the public.

Our choice for #3 is City Dogs Rescue and City Kitties in Washington, D.C.. This non-profit organization focuses on rescuing adoptable dogs and cats from high-kill shelters throughout the metropolitan area. It is made up of volunteers who foster animals in their homes.

City Dogs Rescue hosts a variety of popup events at locations throughout the area. Potential adopters can also search through dogs online. The organization is always looking for new foster parents, as fostering a pet helps them take additional animals out of kill shelters.

Coming in at #4 is Dumfries & Galloway Canine Rescue Centre. Based near Glencaple in Scotland, this charity finds new homes for dogs. Since 2003, they have taken dogs from pounds in England, Northern Ireland, and other locations. They also look after strays while they wait to be claimed by owners. Strays that are not claimed are found a new home. In some situations, they will also provide temporary care for pets when their owners are experiencing personal difficulties.

Dumfries & Galloway Canine Rescue Centre has an on-sight behavior specialist who promotes positive reinforcement techniques through customized training plans. Once a dog is adopted, this specialist will continue to provide behavioral support throughout the animal's lifetime. Additionally, if dogs have a difficult time adjusting to life in a kennel, Dumfries & Galloway Canine Rescue Centre will try to place them in foster care until they find a forever home.

At #5 we have Retrieve a Golden of the Midwest. This volunteer-based non-profit operates in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and western Wisconsin. Their mission is to rescue, foster, and find forever homes for golden retrievers and retriever mixes. Their story began in 1985, when their founders found a forever home for one homeless dog whose time in the shelter was up.

Since then, Retrieve a Golden of the Midwest has rescued and rehomed more than 9,000 golden retrievers and retriever mixes. Appalled by the idea that some breeders didn't keep their dogs when they could no longer show them, they have put an incredible amount of energy into saving these loving animals. Volunteers foster, transport, and provide care for dogs in addition to conducting home visits of potential adopters.

Last but not least we have Takis Shelter at #6. Located on the Greek island of Crete, it was founded by a former nightclub owner who began to find abandoned dogs amongst rubbish. The island's southern part had an overwhelming amount of stray dogs, which is why Takis Shelter dedicated 33,000 square meters of private, enclosed olive groves to the animals.

Today, Takis Shelter hosts around 300 dogs and cats, maintaining 20 fenced areas with small sheds and dog houses. Every new arrival is assessed to make sure they are placed with a group of dogs that they will get along well with. While Takis Shelter cannot ship dogs out, they do encourage folks to come visit in order to find an animal they would like to adopt.
