History of the Romance Novel

Love stories can be traced all the way back to Ancient Greece, and some of the works from that time are still around, though most have been lost to history. The romance novel as we know it today was largely influenced by Jane Austen, who is still hailed as a master of the genre. Historical romance was made popular by Sir Walter Scott, who wrote many works of historical fiction in the early 19th century. British publishers Mills and Boon started releasing romance novels as hardback books in the 1930s, and by the 70s, the genre had become incredibly popular throughout Great Britain. Trying to accomplish the same success in North America, the publisher's parent company, Harlequin, started focusing on their marketing strategies in the US and Canada. They targeted women as their main audience, and tried selling their product in chain stores, monthly subscription services, and even supermarkets.

Romance novels are perfect for anyone who enjoys a good love story, whether it's a simple tale of "boy meets girl," or something that incorporates different genres like historical, paranormal, or steampunk. From harrowing tales of affection that might make you cry to narratives of passion with a sinful side, these books are excellent to cozy up with at the end of a long day. In no particular order, here are nine romance series that will keep you coming back for more.

Starting off at #1 is "Made Men," a Mafia romance series by Sarah Brianne. It mostly centers on young men who are newly-inducted in a crime syndicate. The first book follows Elle, a high school senior who works at a local diner. She witnesses a murder and is terrified that someone might have noticed her presence at the scene. Enter Nero, a teenage son of a mob chief who is appointed to keep an eye on the girl and find out what she knows about the act. But when Nero gets to know Elle, he changes his mind and vows to protect her instead.

At #2 is "The Original Sinners" by Tiffany Reisz, which features people who have various indecent relationships. Eleanor Schreiber is a student who goes to a Catholic school. She is pure and innocent until a priest named Soren opens her eyes to the world of BDSM. Not only that, the clergyman also introduces the young maiden to a three-way affair with Kingsley Edge. Eventually, Eleanor dismisses her old submissive self and emerges as Nora Sutherlin, and infamous dominant and erotica writer.

Next, at #3 is "Because You Are Mine," written by Beth Kery. However, the two have conflicting personalities: Francesca is sweet and naive, while Ian is enigmatic and corrupted. At #4 is the "Royals Saga" by Geneva Lee. The series starts with Clara Bishop, an American girl who travels to London after graduating from university. During her stay in the city, she encounters a handsome stranger, who kisses her without warning. The next day, she discovers through a photograph circulating across the tabloids that the man is none other than Prince Alexander of Cambridge, the notorious heir to the throne. After that, the pair begins a whirlwind royalty-commoner romance surrounded by opposition, scandals, and political intrigue.

One day, Liv receives a message from Danny Morgan, her American childhood sweetheart. From that point, the old lovers rekindle their affection for each other. But when Olivia catches him with his ex, she leaves him out of despair. Danny is now determined to win her back once more.

Next, at #7 is a contemporary trilogy by Gina Maxwell entitled "Playboys in Love." Its second installment "Ruthless" centers on Roman, a successful lawyer by day and a hot stripper by night. He meets a junior attorney named Addison and is instantly smitten by her beauty and persona. While they try to stay professional at work, their colleagues can't help but notice the chemistry between them. Soon enough, Addison and Roman find themselves giving into their desires.

At #8 is Sharla Lovelace's "Charmed in Texas." One of the books in this series begins with Lanie, who lied to her late Aunt Ruby about being married and having a job. Now, her aunt's will indicates that in order for Lanie to inherit her house, she must bring her husband and stay for three whole months. Luckily, she chances upon Nick McKane, who desperately needs to earn money for his child's education. The two collaborate in faking their marriage, but in the long run, Nick loses his heart to Lanie.

Finally, at #9 is "Westerly Billionaire" by Ruth Cardello, which tells the story of five siblings vying for the great wealth that their grandmother offers. The matriarch sets up one rule: she will grant inheritance to any of her grandchildren who get married and invite the entire family to the ceremony. Soon, complications arise: Brett falls in love with his brother's fiance, Spencer wants to win his college sweetheart back, Rachelle gets enamored with a prince, and Eric finds a girl who can help him cope with depression.
