LaurDIY is a YouTube channel known for do-it-yourself tutorial videos on topics like accessories, clothes, home decor, and beauty. It was created in 2012 by Lauren Riihimaki, who was born on August 11, 1993. Aside from DIY videos, Lauren posts vlogs about her life as well. Her videos have gained a number of views and created a legion of fans who call themselves "Pretty Little Laurs." She also runs the website LaurDIY.com, where she sells apparel and plushy gifts. Moreover, she launched her own line of animal-inspired onesies in collaboration with SleepRiot.com.
Lauren, who is of Japanese, Finnish, and Ukrainian descent, was born in Ontario, Canada. According to her, she was always fascinated with art while growing up. In an interview with social news website Flare.com, she explained that the name "LaurDIY" is a running joke in her family, since her love for handmade items started when she was a child.
Lauren studied at Ryerson University, where she earned her Bachelor of Technology in Graphics Communications Management degree in 2015. Although her degree program offered future employment opportunities, Lauren found that she was not able to fully showcase her talents in the program, so she started her first blog with the title "Desire and Inspire," as a creative outlet from the university.
With the use of a WordPress website, she initially posted DIY tutorials with the help of pictures showing her creative process. However, according to Lauren, she wanted to make the tutorials more vibrant by using video. Thus, she embraced YouTube as a way to upload her videos so she could embed them on her blog.
Lauren stated that at first she had no idea how the platform worked, and was surprised when she started to gain a considerable number of subscribers. Since then, she has posted videos on her channel regularly. Because YouTube wasn't yet popular where she was, she had to learn the website by herself. Accordingly, when Lauren realized that it was possible to monetize her content, she made the transition from blogging to vlogging on YouTube.
In one of her vlogs, Lauren revealed that she was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder after moving to Toronto for college. She detailed that she would have panic attacks in situations where she had no control. The stress led her to seek professional help, and eventually take medication. However, she explained that being on YouTube helped her a lot in overcoming her anxiety.
Lauren has said that she is motivated by her viewers, and that there is nothing more heart-warming than meeting a subscriber. She further explained that it drives her to do better, knowing that those people make a conscious decision to watch her content. According to her, "DIY Skull Cut Out T-Shirt Tutorial," and "Ariana Grande Hair, Makeup, and Outfit Tutorial" are the first two videos that gained vast popularity.
Because of the success of her channel, Lauren was able to work with brands such as Starbucks, Duck Tape, and Mudd. She was also given the opportunity to collaborate with Disney, along with other YouTubers, for a travel series aimed at promoting the company's clothing line and other merchandise. Lauren has also been featured in magazines such as "Seventeen," "J-14," and "Pulse Spikes." In 2017, she released her first single, "DIY Queen," wherein she showcased her talent for rap and singing.
Lauren is also active on other social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. She regularly posts not only about her DIY videos and vlogs, but her collaborations with other YouTubers as well. She also often posts about her life with boyfriend Alex Wassabi, who is also a YouTube vlogger, with the channel Wassabi Productions. Today, LaurDIY is managed by Select Management, which is an agency specifically for digital talents with massive online audiences.
