Calum Hood is a member of 5 Seconds of Summer, a widely popular pop-rock band. He was born on January 25, 1996, in Sydney, Australia. While a lot of people mistake him for being Chinese, Calum is actually half Maori and half Scottish.
His parents are Joy and David Hood. He has a sister named Mali-Koa Hood who also sings and writes songs. She became one of the contestants of "The Voice" Australia in 2012. Calum studied at Norwest Christian College, where he met two of his future bandmates. Their drummer, Ashton Irwin, joined the band later on.
He plays the bass and performs with his co-members Luke Hemmings, Ashton Irwin, and Michael Gordon Clifford. They started to gain attention from fans when they posted videos of their covers on YouTube in 2011 and 2012. Their followers grew, and soon, they were YouTube celebrities.
The group became even more popular when they joined One Direction's "Take Me Home" tour. In 2014, they were able to release their debut single, "She Looks So Perfect", which conquered music charts around the world in countries including Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and New Zealand. This success was followed by their first studio album.
Some of the people who noticed the group's YouTube videos were One Direction band members Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, who tweeted about the new band's songs.
The boys toured all over the globe in 2015, and their "Sounds Live Feels Live World Tour" in 2016 included sold out shows in arenas and stadiums.
According to fans and critics online, Calum Hood was the one who pushed the band to write their own songs, and contributes the most to the writing process. Music producer and Engineer Zakk Cervini complimented Calum in an interview, saying he's an amazing writer.
Calum is also known for having meaningful tattoos on his body. Some of these are his mom and dad's initials on his hands, a feather on his collarbone, a horseshoe tattoo on his arm, a Roman Numeral on his collar as a tribute to his band, a bird with his sister's name on his arm, and lastly, a Native American tattoo. According to the band's short interview with "Seventeen" magazine, he thinks having tattoos that symbolize his family brings him good luck and makes him feel like they're always with him.
Before starting in the music industry, he was one of the representatives of Australia in a football competition held in Brazil in 2012. But because of his new career, he decided to drop out of school, give up his dreams of becoming a football player, and focus on his journey as an artist instead. Some of his biggest idols are Chris Brown and Katy Perry.
Some of the songs that Calum wrote or co-wrote with his band are "Don't Stop," "Kiss Me Kiss Me," "Lost Boy," "Independence Day," "Tomorrow Never Dies," and "Heartache On The Big Screen." Five Seconds of Summer won "Best New Artist" at the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards. That same year, they also won the "Song of the Year" award for their debut single, "She Looks So Perfect" at the ARIA Music Awards.
Calum and his bandmates founded a record label in 2014 and named it "Hi or Hey Records." Their parent companies are Capitol Records and Universal Music Group. They also announced they will not only be releasing their music under this label, but would sign other bands. The first band signed was "Hey Violet."
