How To Contour With Mario

What Is Contouring?

Contouring is the look popularized by Kim Kardashian, thanks to Mario's help. The goal is to frame the face in order to bring out your cheekbones. Adding bronzer on the hairline and jawline, blended with concealer on the cheeks, thins the look of the face without dramatic lines. Mario teaches these techniques in his Master Class, which he holds at different venues around the world.

In Depth

Mario Dedivanovic is the man behind Kim Kardashian's famous sculpted look. The two of them have redefined the word "contour" as a makeup trend. Even without a good bone structure, contouring allows women to get the look they're after. Dedivanovic has made this possible with the use of the right makeup tools and products. From his humble beginnings, he now has worked with A-list celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, and Chrissy Teigen.

Dedivanovic grew up poor, with immigrant parents. Beauty always inspired him as a young Albanian-American. He told an interviewer that he would sometimes ask his father to drive him to neighborhoods with lovely houses and gardens. Little did he know this inspiration would lead to a fulfilling career.

He started working as a perfume consultant at a New York-based Sephora store when he was 17. Although fragrances and scents were his first love, Mario felt that the job wasn't for him. He fell in love with makeup when a woman asked him for help in choosing the right lipstick. Right then, he knew what he wanted to pursue.

Mario started working as a freelancer in 2008, and did some work for Fox News. He would do the make-up of Megyn Kelly and Julie Banderas, who started requesting him. Julie was shocked after he finished doing her make-up for the first time. She couldn't believe that a neophyte in the industry could be that good.

His big break came when he was 24. He was hired for a "Social Life" magazine cover shoot to work with none other than Kim Kardashian. Mario became Kim's go-to makeup artist and shopping partner. He recalled that when they met, he didn't know much about her. Dedivanovic told "Allure" that he knew her name and the TV show she was on, but that was it.

After years of working together, Mario is familiar with what Kim likes and what looks best on her face. Kim trusts him completely, and he's said that there are times that she won't even look in the mirror after he finishes doing her makeup.

He started the "contouring" trend, which he called "a diet for the face." It involves a dark powder for shadow, and highlights to make some areas pop. It became an instant hit with avid makeup users.

Contouring helped him carve a signature style that is clean and simple, yet feminine. This caught the attention of the other Kardashians, Katy Perry, and J-Lo. Thousands of beauty vloggers and social media influencers tried to replicate the look.

Mario believes that perfecting the art of contouring takes time, and once it becomes a part of a person's daily routine, it becomes second nature. His social media presence continues to grow, and his Instagram has more than 4 million followers.

Aside from being Kim Kardashian's makeup artist, Mario is also famous for his Master Class. This is a makeup tutorial which started with only 20 participants. He revealed that his intention in doing makeup tutorials is to share his knowledge and techniques with other people. He also added that he always wanted to become a teacher, and with Master Class, he found a way to do both of the things he loves at the same time.

Despite all the attention his work has gotten, he doesn't want fame to go to his head. He refuses to call his followers his "Fans" because, as he says, "my clients have fans."

Mario likes to unwind once or twice a month. Using the PRIV app, he books an at-home massage in his parent's home, where he says he relaxes well. When he's with his parents, he speaks their first language, which is Albanian. His sister organizes his Master Classes, and his mother helps too.

Dedivanovic said to last in the business, respect is important, because his clients are already under a lot of pressure. His advice for a newbie makeup artist today is simple: treat everyone with respect and enjoy your work. Loving your work makes it lighter and more satisfying.
