Irene Kim on Social Media
Popularly known as the "Korean It Girl," Irene Kim is a Korean-American fashion model, TV personality, beauty vlogger, and influencer.
She first gained the attention of the American fashion scene in 2014. Irene was recognized as the street style star with rainbow-hued hair. She is regarded as an influencer who sits front row at shows during fashion weeks in Asia, America, and Europe.
Irene was born on November 6, 1987, in Seattle, Washington. She is the second eldest among four siblings, and both her parents are of Korean descent. Irene moved to Korea during her middle school years, and attended an international high school in Daejeon, South Korea. Years later, she went back to the US and studied textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology or FIT, in New York City.
After graduating, Irene worked at the online magazine, StyleLikeU.com for 2 years. She believes that it was a wonderful experience because it gave her variety of roles, and a chance to work with its most famous stylist and one of its founders, Elisa Goodkind.
Irene went back to Korea and did part-time modelling. In 2012, she joined fashion shows for the popular Korean brands, Jardin de Chouette and S.J.Y.P., which she considers as the biggest turning point of her career. She then started full-time modelling at 25.
One of the highlights of her career was her photo diary for Vogue.com in 2015. Irene has also worked for famous fashion brands like Calvin Klein, Chanel, and MaxMara.
At age 15, she was offered a modelling job in exchange for a minor cosmetic surgery, but she turned it down. Irene said in her interview with Time, "It's about being yourself and loving yourself." She added that there were times when people tell her that she is too old, or doesn't have the typical Asian facial structure, yet she pursued what she always loves doing. Because of her stand against cosmetic surgeries, and her advocacy for changing people's perception of beauty globally, Time Magazine dubbed Irene as the 2016's "New Face of the Fashion World."
Her rainbow-hued hair was also a risk she took. Irene claims to be one of the first Asians to do it. Since then, she's been playing with the color of her hair, which eventually became her trademark.
Irene's love for beauty is evident, as she posts beauty vlogs from time to time. In an interview with Vogue, she mentioned that she wants "to show that beauty is for everyone, and it's all about experimenting." Her fascination with cosmetics began at the age of four, when she would play with her grandmother's makeup box. Irene has said that she got all her sense of style from her grandmother.
In 2015, Irene became a global brand contributor for Estee Lauder, an American-based company known for its cosmetic products. She worked with its brand ambassador and fellow model, Kendall Jenner.
Besides beauty vlogging, her YouTube channel also showcase fashion vlogs such as fashion week diaries and her line of wardrobe.
From being a model to a vlogger, she also co-hosts the TV show "K-Style," a program on Mnet America that explores Korean lifestyle. In 2017, she also started creating digital content for K-Style. Irene creates passion projects, which are short fashion films for high-designer brands. In these productions, she personally picks the outfits, decides the makeup and hair concepts, and the overall theme.
In South Korea, Irene also hosts "Style Live," and appears on other popular Korean TV shows like the "Running Man."
Social media took a huge role in her life. According to Irene, social media has made her career, which she was apprehensive to admit at first. She was also one of first 10 percent of people who joined Instagram when it started. Irene also thinks that social media was initially a platform, that has transformed into a business, although, she tries not to take it too seriously.
She is particularly active on her Instagram account. Eva Chen, the head of fashion partnerships for Instagram, says that Irene is part of a new generation of fashion personalities whose fans are invited to sit with them through fittings and shows.
