In Depth

In an age where startups are making front page headlines on a daily basis, entrepreneurs are constantly looking for inspiration. While there are plenty of resources for information, few provide an approach as in-depth as Foundr, a digital publication that helps entrepreneurs learn about the process of starting a successful business.

The magazine was created in 2013 by Nathan Chan, an Australian entrepreneur who started the publication from a laptop in his bedroom while still working full time as a publishing consultant. At the beginning of his career, he did IT support, but found it unfulfilling. Chan's philosophy was to simply create something that he would want to read. He felt that there was no good material out there for young people trying to start their own businesses, and wanted to fill that gap.

It began as a hobby. Nathan worked on it late at night and early in the morning before going to his day job. He started the magazine with a $3000 investment on his own credit card. But soon, his side project grew into something much larger.

Hundreds of successful entrepreneurs have been featured in Foundr, including Arianna Huffington, Seth Godin, Tim Ferriss, and Richard Branson. Their interviews have inspired small business owners by offering their stories of trial and error along with advice from the lessons they've learned on their way up the ladder.

In addition to the magazine, the company offers several other products aimed at helping small business owners grow their clientele and improve their social media presence. These include courses such as "Instagram Domination" and "Productivity Machine." There is also a private group called the Foundr Club that helps members connect with one another. It gives insider access to articles and case studies not available through the regular subscription.

There is no print version of Foundr, with the exception of special editions. It is digital only and can be downloaded on both iOS and Android devices. Readers can buy a single issue, or pay for a monthly or yearly subscription. The first special edition was done in 2017 and featured Richard Branson, the extremely diverse entrepreneur who runs over 400 businesses under the Virgin name, including an airline, mobile network, and record company.

Foundr also produces a popular podcast hosted by Nathan Chan himself. It has featured successful investors and business owners such as Mark Cuban, Julia Hartz, and Sean Ellis. Each segment teaches listeners how to build, market, and raise money for their startups. You can listen on Spotify, Soundcloud, the podcast app for iOS, or even directly from their website.

Most of their products are digital only, but if you're looking for something in print, a coffee table book called Founder V1.0 is available for around $90. It began as a Kickstarter project that raised over four times as much as the original goal. Also called "The Entrepreneur's Bible," it includes stories from CEOs and industry influencers on how they got to where they are today. They also give interviews, quotes, and advice on how to raise money and start a business.

The magazine has over 250,000 subscribers and 1 million podcast listeners all over the world. It has helped small business owners in many different industries to start and grow their companies, including fitness, fashion, retail, and health and wellness.

One of the most popular posts on the site's blog is about getting more Instagram followers. Nathan noticed one day that an increase in his followers led to a higher number of magazine subscribers, so he decided to pursue it and focus on social media. Written by Chan himself, the article details how the company managed to go from zero to over ten thousand followers in only two weeks. It includes tips on choosing the best type of content, engaging with your audience, and the best time and frequency to post.

A few years later, the company has an even stronger presence on social media. They have over a million followers on Instagram and nearly half a million likes on Facebook. They also offer daily tips and tricks on running a business to their 130,000 followers on Twitter.
