Editor's Notes

April 08, 2019:

If you're having trouble enjoying your space or sleeping at night, one of these compact A/C units can make a huge difference. Keep a few things in mind, though: they aren't meant for cooling very large rooms, and while they do draw less electricity than larger models, they can still be quite the power hog. Check with whomever pays the electric bills before installing one, as they can cause certainly cause an uptick in cost. And they can be a bit noisy, too. Sometimes the noise can be mitigated with additional support underneath the unit on the outside of the house.

With that out of the way, there are a few relatively affordable options that are both effective and reliable. The LG, TCL, and Koldfront are pretty similar in performance as well as price. Frigidaire is a very well-known brand of home appliances, and their most popular option works well, though it's slightly more costly than a lot of others. Their cheapest option does away with electronic controls, which is rare, and something that some users actually prefer, as it's a little more straightforward to use and can be adjusted without any annoying beeping noises. The Chigo is relatively portable as it doesn't require mounting, but it does still need to be vented to the outdoors. And if you're looking for the absolute best performance, check out the Mitsubishi, which is a two-in-one heating and cooling solution that's designed for year-round use. It's considerably costly compared to the others, but it's by far one of the most efficient, and is therefore a great investment.
