The 10 Best Carbon Fiber Violin Bows

Updated October 22, 2020 by Luke Mitchell

This wiki has been updated 21 times since it was first published in December of 2016. Even the finest Stradivarius is just a handsome paperweight without a good bow to make its strings sing. And while many violinists cling to traditional wooden models, a modern musician knows that carbon fiber is one of the best materials available when it comes to durability and flexibility. Additionally, they often have a sleek look that complements your sound and your instrument nicely. Editor's Notes

October 20, 2020:

We have updated our list to include three new additions. The first of these is the Yamaha CBB-101, which, as a product of this reputable instrument maker inspires confidence, albeit at a price. Like all the bows in this ranking, it is impervious to warping and will last much longer than the Pernambuco wooden bows upon which it is modeled. Those violinists looking to switch from wood to carbon fiber will find the transition easy with this option, as it offers the same feel and tone as a good quality traditional bow.

Next, we added the MI&VI Professional, as, despite its modest price tag, it is a well-made example that has a number of features that you might see on a far more expensive model, while more importantly, offering excellent playability and tone. Mobile musicians looking for a good value model that is sturdy enough to take on the road would find this to be a worthy choice.

Lastly, we included the eye-catching TPG Sharp Bow. With its glittery shaft and dyed Mongolian horsehair, it is intended to impress, and while it may not be suitable in all musical scenarios, adds a fun element to live performance. In addition to its unique appearance, it is exceptionally well-made and, encouragingly, comes with a lifetime guarantee.

July 10, 2019:

Anyone who has broken the tip off a bow should look at getting one of these carbon fiber options. They are stronger than traditional wooden bows and offer other advantages, as well. Most notably, they are not susceptible to environmental conditions like heat, cold, or humidity. Wooden bows can warp or swell depending on these conditions, so you have to keep adjusting the tension of the hair. Carbon fiber models offer consistent and predictable performance in all conditions so they're ideal for outside use or by touring musicians.

In this update, we evaluated our selections based on quality, reputation, and value. We removed an item due to concerns about its availability and added the VingoBow New in one of our top slots. It offers advanced performance for a beginner's price and looks great as well.
