True to our word from our last update, we continue to avoid flooded and gel-type batteries and stick to the safer, more efficient LiFePO4 and sealed lead acid options. This includes the newly added ExpertPower EP12100, a force to be reckoned with that features a built-in management system that safeguards it against problems like overcharging, overheating, deep discharging, overloading, and short circuits. It stands up well to temperatures as high as 140 degrees Fahrenheit, and is compact and lightweight enough for convenient storage and transport, making it a good choice for marine and RV applications. It replaces the Orient Power Cordy, a four-cell model that’s no longer available at this time.
We also replaced the discontinued Goal Zero Yeti 400 with the more powerful Goal Zero Yeti 500X, a power station that can power up to seven small devices at a time, like phones, tablets, laptops, and cameras. It’s got a built-in pure sine wave inverter and recharges from either AC or a solar panel, sold separately. This portable choice features a sturdy carrying handle and a comprehensive LCD that shows you how much power you have left with just a quick glance. It also offers an input/output meter and a runtime/recharge time calculator. Our list also includes a couple of options from well-known solar company Renogy. The reliable Renogy LFP boasts a rated service life of more than double that of traditional lead acid batteries. It’s also equipped with high and low voltage protection, as well as protection from over-current, high temperatures, and short circuits. Its low rate of self-discharge is no more than three percent per month. The Renogy AGM is a sealed lead acid model that contains fiberglass mats that soak up the sulfuric acid inside of it, while remaining leak-free. It operates at safe, low temperatures and can last for up to 600 cycles. For safety’s sake, be sure to charge any given battery at a safe voltage level, based on the manufacturer’s recommended limit. In addition, store batteries within the stated temperature range, as elevated temperatures can reduce a battery’s lifespan and cause problems like thermal runaway.

First of all, flooded and gel-type lead-acid batteries are simply not recommended for modern solar energy systems. They're inefficient, expensive to produce, and potentially dangerous. So, until Elon Musk figures out something new, it's LiFePO4 vs. lead-acid, each of which have advantages and disadvantages. If you don't want to make a huge investment, the Universal is a perfect choice. Those in search of more capacity and better regulation should look at the Orient Power, but keep in mind that LiFePO4 batteries lack the nearly fool-proof safety of the AGM variety. The Renogy LFP offers about the most usable energy storage you'll find, though at a high premium. And the Battle Born is a seriously solid device; it's probably the longest-lasting of all.
