The bigger decision is health screening: it can flag inherited risks such as a drug sensitivity, which matters to breeders and pet owners alike, but it never diagnoses disease.

Embark Breed + Health now leads this list: it pairs a full breed breakdown with one of the broadest inherited-disease screens in a single swab. This page covers the two labs that dominate home dog DNA testing, Embark and Wisdom Panel, across breed-only, health and purebred kits.
The old Mars Wisdom Panel 3.0 is now sold as Wisdom Panel Breed Discovery, and Wisdom Panel Essential now comes as a two-kit box. Embark Breed ID stays. Wisdom Panel Premium and Embark Purebred are new. We dropped the 5Strands Sensitivity & Intolerance kit, which reads hair rather than DNA, and three tests that are gone: Mars Wisdom Panel Genetic Health, Orivet Health Screen and Orivet Ancestry.
We weighed each lab's published breed and disease panels, a vet-reviewed roundup, a side-by-side of the two big labs and recall records. Both companies quote high accuracy rates for themselves, and no independent lab has published a head-to-head, so we don't pick a winner on accuracy alone. Smaller brands such as DNA My Dog and Orivet GenoPet didn't make it, because their accuracy complaints run too deep.

We added the Embark Breed ID, which offers all the same breed identification functions as the Embark Health minus the health screening and which is less expensive as a result. We also included the Mars Wisdom Panel Essential, a similarly stripped-down version of Mars Wisdom tests which nonetheless boasts solid all-around features like tests for common diseases and disorders, as well as a test of the MDR1 gene.
We considered adding the DNA My Dog Cheek Swab but decided against it due to the large volume of complaints regarding inaccuracy in testing.

A breed-only kit answers the question most people start with: what is this dog? It reads the breed mix, physical traits like coat color and size, and often finds relatives that also tested. If that's all you want, the cheaper kits from both labs do it well.

Wisdom Panel Essential checks a shorter list of 25 or more, including a back disc disease and some bleeding disorders (Wisdom Panel Essential).
The result vets act on most is MDR1, a gene variant common in collies, Australian shepherds and other herding breeds that makes a dog sensitive to some everyday drugs. Even the cheapest Wisdom Panel kit includes it. Keep the rest in proportion: a variant raises the odds of a disease, it doesn't diagnose one, and a "carrier" is usually a healthy dog that can pass the gene on. PetMD's vet panel says a kit is no substitute for regular vet care, so take any at-risk result to your vet before changing anything (PetMD).
How Accurate Are The Results?
Both labs compare your dog's DNA with a reference panel of known breeds, and both claim very high accuracy. Those are company figures. Wisdom Panel also cites a 2024 journal comparison that favored its own results, but that claim comes from the maker's site, and we found no independent lab test that settles the question.
What comparisons do show is where the reports agree. A side-by-side of the two big labs found they usually match on a dog's main breeds and differ on the small trace percentages near the bottom (Petful). Treat the smallest slices as a hint, not a fact. A breed that isn't in a lab's reference panel can't show up, so a rare breed may come back as its closest relatives.
Consumer pet DNA tests aren't reviewed by the FDA, and scientists have called for tighter standards, warning that a misread health result could lead to needless treatment (Wikipedia: Embark Veterinary). That's another reason to confirm health findings with your vet.
Swabbing, Waiting And Privacy
Wait at least 30 minutes after your dog eats, drinks or plays before swabbing, and keep other dogs from licking or sharing toys first, or the sample can pick up the wrong DNA (Petful). Rub the swab firmly inside the cheek for the time the instructions give, let it dry if they say to, and register the kit's code online before you mail it.
Most results arrive within two to five weeks, according to PetMD. A swab that doesn't hold enough DNA means a second swab and a longer wait.
Read the privacy settings when you register. Embark uses submitted DNA for research unless the owner opts out (Embark privacy policy), and both labs' relative finders only work if you let your dog's profile be matched. If you'd rather stay private, change those settings before the results come in.
