Editor's Notes

May 21, 2020:

Removed the VGate iCar because of availability issues. Removed the Autel MP808TS MaxiPro and the Innova 3160g because they are not scanner tools that are used via a phone - they are simply scan tools with their own screen and interface. Added the Honeywell Professional, the Jethax 001, and the VGate iCar Pro.

While all OBDII scanners provide code reading and erasing functions, only some of them provide information about the status of the engine and powertrain's systems. When you learn how to interpret data metrics such as sensor voltages, air/fuel ratios, oil temperature, and fuel pressure, you gain the ability to very accurately diagnose and repair a car. Models like the BlueDriver LSB2 and the Honeywell Professional provide information about several different systems. While none of these metrics are tied to any one possible issue, together with other metrics and trouble codes, you can gain a holistic picture of the status of your car. So for example, if you note that your car is sputtering or has a rough idle, and you note that the air/fuel ratio is out of acceptable range, it only narrows the problem down to either the fuel system, the air intake system, or the sensors associated with those systems. Once you bring in data about the fuel pressure, and note that the fuel pressure is out of range, then you can determine that the culprit will almost certainly be somewhere along the fuel supply (pressure regulator, filter, pump etc) but short of the injectors - this allows you to skip a lot of costly and time-consuming trial and error.

Auto repair and maintenance can be dangerous and should only be performed by trained automotive technicians to avoid injury or damage to equipment.
