Editor's Notes

August 16, 2020:

Not all brands follow the same guidelines when cutting fabric, so you should check the sizing chart before buying a pair of sweatpants. If you don't know your measurements, take them around the waist and hips, and along the inseam to ensure a proper fit.

Next, consider the fabric. As a natural fiber, cotton is highly susceptible to shrinkage. So, it is best to wash brands made of 100 percent cotton in cold water by hand and let them air dry. The only brand on this list with a 100 percent cotton shell is the Yeokou Sherpa Lined Joggers. If not for the sizing issue, it would have ranked higher. When it comes to softness and warmth, they are remarkably comfortable.

Most of the other brands listed here are made of a cotton/poly blend or a polyester and spandex blend. Even so, the manufacturers of the Aibrou Workout Bottoms and the U.S. Polo Assn. Boyfriend Sweats recommend laundering these brands by hand for the best results.

Polyester, on the other hand, is a synthetic fiber. Therefore, sweatpants like the Leggings Depot Joggers are less likely to shrink. Unless, of course, you wash them in hot water or dry them on high heat.

Nevertheless, you can always order a size up if you're concerned about the sizing issue. A drawstring makes it easy to make adjustments, and you can fold the waistband over if needed.
