Because tent stakes vary in shape and size to suit different kinds of terrain, we looked for a diverse mix that could accommodate camping of all sorts. For general purposes, there's the Vargo Titanium and MSR Groundhog. These hold well in compact or rocky ground, although the latter probably has the edge when it comes to loose, sandy soil. Neither set is particularly cheap, but they definitely fall under "you get what you pay for," as both are durable enough for extended use. We did add some budget-friendly alternatives, including the All One Tech Aluminum and the Chill Gorilla 11.8, but whether these are as strong is a matter of some debate. For more specific scenarios, there's the Speed Cinch 9-Inch, better for loose ground; the MSR Sand/Snow, specifically crafted for, well, sand or snow; and the BareFour Heavy Duty, which shouldn't bend in hard, rocky, unforgiving earth.
