Lands' End Canvas Whereas many fabric models, especially the inexpensive ones, feel flimsy, the Lands' End Canvas boasts rugged and robust materials paired with a wipe-clean polyester liner. There aren't many color choices to select from, but monogramming is available, so you can customize it to the recipient. landsend.com
Floyd Underbed Storage If you already have the Floyd Bed, a sleek, modern platform model, the Floyd Underbed Storage will complement it perfectly. It slides out on rails, making it one of the easier choices to get into and out of; add it to one side, or both, should you need more space. floydhome.com
Black Forest Decor Aspen 2 Drawer The Black Forest Decor Aspen 2 Drawer demands more of an investment than some high-quality mattresses, but it is handmade in the USA out of naturally harvested dead wood, making it an environmentally-responsible choice. It's handsome, as well, with a rustic look that would be right at home in a bedroom with a country or nature-based decorative scheme. blackforestdecor.com
Editor's Notes
May 27, 2020:
To maximize the space under your bed, you have plenty of options, but when it comes to usability for a relatively affordable price, the Sterilite Fresh Scent Box is tough to beat. Because it uses a dryer sheet to keep odors at bay, you won't have to deal with musty scents, and the wheels make it a cinch to use. If you're looking for something more attractive, and not made out of plastic, there's the StorageWorks Foldable and the DormCo Storage Max. The former is fabric, while the latter is made out of wood, but both have handsome, understated styling that won't draw attention if you don't happen to have a bed skirt to cover them.
If it is shoes you need to store, specifically, then you might take a look at the Ziz Shoe Organizer or the Sterilite ClearView. These offer the protection you need to keep dust and dirt off your sneakers, flats, heels, and more. For blankets, there's the Whitmor Jumbo and the ClosetMaid Fabric. These aren't necessarily crafted from the strongest fabric ever made, but they're simple, inexpensive, and short enough to slip under most beds. If you happen to have a taller bed frame, the Iwill Create Pro Lidded might work, but the dainty polka dot pattern is not for everyone. It should pair nicely with shabby chic decor, though.
