Editor's Notes

April 21, 2020:

While vases do make great homes for cut, live flowers and other stalky plants, there’s many other things you can place in them. While faux flowers are an obvious option, other items like incense sticks and cooking utensils aren’t out of the question as long as the vase you choose is up to the task. Meanwhile, some models such as the Rivet Modern, Sullivans Ceramic Set, and WGV International are attractive and interesting enough that they don’t necessarily need an occupant to fill whatever void you’re addressing. However, if you know you’d like to bring more plants, vases, or both into your home, but don’t know where to start, there are plenty of great books on interior design out there that might help you along. Since vases aren’t that expensive, and can last a lifetime if treated right, it might suit you to buy multiple models and try different things, or even switch up your interior from season to season or year to year.

While vases don’t pose many dangers, most are made from breakable materials, so be sure to place yours well away from ledges they might fall from, or high traffic areas where they might get accidentally knocked over. Similarly, depending on their design and the materials they are crafted from, some models run the risk of scratching furniture, so you might consider placing them on anything from doilies to drink coasters.

Finally, although you might think it goes without saying, just to be sure, please remember vases are not intended for drinking liquids from or storing any sort of food in, even if they appear similar to other cups and glasses.
