May 26, 2020:
When it comes to furniture intended for children, safety is always a top concern, which is why we looked for wooden toy chests that boast things like rounded edges and corners, a slow closing lid, and a toxic chemical-free paint or finish. Of course, durability was important too, as kids are notoriously rough on things.
Of all the items on our list, the Juvale 3-Piece Trunk Set is the only one that doesn't feature safety hinges. We still included it though, as it is perfect for a slightly older child who may not need a slow-closing lid anymore and wants something that has a more grown up appeal.
If you have really young children who may struggle even with a slam-free lid and you still want them to be able to access their toys without any help, the Sauder Pogo is the ideal option. It features two open bins on the bottom and two bookshelves above them. It would be great for twins too, as each bin has a name tag holder, so there is never any arguments over whose is whose.
If trying to save space in a home, it is important to make the most out of every piece of furniture. The KidKraft Limited Edition 14156, Milliard MIL-TBX-A, and KidKraft Austin help you do that by doubling as reading nooks. Because the Delta Children Deluxe Toy Box and Melissa & Doug 30256 lack side rests, they may not be ideal as reading nooks, but they can double as a simple bench for your children to play with their toys.
Of all of our recommendations, the Fantasy Fields Thematic Collection and Delta Children Deluxe Toy Box might be the most appealing to kids because they come in fun motifs ranging from favorite cartoon characters to fire trucks and outer space. On the down side, their juvenile look may be the least appealing to parents who may want something a bit more sophisticated to put in a shared living space.
