Ski length ranges by height

Faction starts from a ski that reaches somewhere between your nose and eyebrows, and gives a range for each height: take some length off if you're a beginner or intermediate, and push toward your full height or beyond if you're advanced.

The two charts don't always agree. At 5'10", evo says 165 cm for a beginner, while Faction's range for 180 cm starts at 170 cm. Treat both as starting points.

Should you size up or down?

Shorter skis are more nimble and easier to turn; longer skis are more stable at speed. evo's reasons:

  • Go shorter if you're a beginner or intermediate, like short quick turns, weigh less than average for your height, ski mostly groomed runs, or want a carving ski with plenty of camber.
  • Go longer if you're advanced or expert, ski fast and aggressively, weigh more than average for your height, ski mostly ungroomed terrain, or want a powder ski with plenty of rocker.

Faction adds hard snow to the reasons to go shorter, and mostly off-piste skiing to the reasons to go longer.

Kids' ski size chart

evo's kids' chart uses the average height and weight for each age. If your child is light for their height, size shorter; if heavy, longer. Go shorter (closer to the chest) for beginners and cautious skiers, longer (closer to the nose) for fast, aggressive ones, and if you want room to grow, lean toward the longer end without going much past the range.

Ski sizing FAQ

What size skis do I need?
evo says the right ski length is typically somewhere between your chin and the top of your head. Its chart gives a length for your height at each ability level, and Faction gives a range for your height. Beginners and intermediates go toward the short end; fast, aggressive and off-piste skiers go longer.
Should I size my skis up or down?
Size down if you're a beginner or intermediate, like short quick turns, weigh less than average for your height, ski mostly groomers or want a cambered carving ski. Size up if you're advanced, ski fast, weigh more than average for your height, ski mostly ungroomed snow or want a rockered powder ski.
What size skis for a child?
Use height first, then weight. evo's kids' chart runs from about 70 cm skis for a 3-year-old to 150-160 cm at 14. If a child is light for their height, size shorter; if heavy, longer. Room to grow is a reason evo gives to go toward the longer end, but it advises against sizing much bigger than the recommended range.
