Editor's Notes

December 10, 2020:

We removed the 3Doodler Create+ 3D Printing Pen, the Thames & Kosmos Chem C2000, and the Fire HD 8 due to availability concerns and replaced them with The Dangerous Book for Boys, the Think Fun Gravity Maze, and the Playz Kaboom Science Lab. The Think Fun Gravity Maze and Playz Kaboom Science Lab are both educational options, teaching problem solving skills and offering crucial critical thinking practice. And even though these games are based in learning, kids will still have a lot of fun using them.

Although we already had a guide book on our list, the Manual To Manhood, we also wanted to include The Dangerous Book for Boys. It has a different set of skills, and it also includes short stories, history, DIY projects, and even information about trees and fossils. Between these two books, your teen will have a strong foundation of essential skills and knowledge.

November 20, 2019:

Given how tumultuous a time it is being a 13-year-old boy, it was imperative that we offer a wide variety of products on a list like this. Some, like the GoPro Hero8 Black or the Fire HD 8 are decidedly best suited for boys who are a little more on the mature side of 13, where late bloomers with a firm foothold in their childhoods would do better with something like the Mindstorms EV3 or the Maisto Rock Crawler.

A lot of this comes down to knowing how your 12-year-old has developed mentally and emotionally toward his 13th birthday, but a safe bet for all might be the Manual To Manhood, which offers a litany of advice that should be useful for a 13-year-old at any stage of personal development, especially when it comes to talking to their crushes. To set everybody's mind at ease here, it should be noted that the book's emphasis on empathy and listening in the pursuit of a date should create a situation in which — even if he gets turned down — he'll begin growing into the kind of man you want him to be.
