Editor's Notes

November 20, 2019:

When revisiting this list, we wanted to ensure that all the selections on it were diverse enough to cater to the stage of life that six-year-old girls are entering. They are still very much children, but as they inch closer to the big kid years, now is a good time to teach her important skills she hasn't yet learned and continue to develop her fine and gross motor skills, logical and sequential thinking, and of course, entertain and delight her.

We let go of the Barbie Birthday Princess to make way for the Husan Safe, which we feel is a more versatile toy that also has the benefit of teaching early money management. If the child you're shopping for is a big sister, then she'll appreciate the level of privacy this toy gives her all the more.

We also said goodbye to the Hape Wooden Kitchen Play Set, which we loved, but feel that at age six, a young girl may be close to growing out of this particular model. To fill the vacancy, we added the Joystar Vintage. This well-designed bike is great for both beginners and those who have already learned to ride, thanks to the removable training wheels. Thankfully for parents, it arrives 85% assembled, and comes with the small tools needed to finish the job. Just be aware before purchasing that you'll need a pump for the tires.

The Osmo Genius Kit was also updated to reflect the newest iteration of the product. It comes with everything you need to get started with the system, excluding the iPad, of course. If you don't want to deal with removing your child-friendly iPad case every time you use it, know that you can opt for a pack that includes a special case from Osmo.

Born in Arizona, Gia is a writer and autodidact who fled the heat of the desert for California, where she enjoys drinking beer, overanalyzing the minutiae of life, and channeling Rick Steves. After arriving in Los Angeles a decade ago, she quickly nabbed a copywriting job at a major clothing company and derived years of editing and proofreading experience from her tenure there, all while sharpening her skills further with myriad freelance projects. In her spare time, she teaches herself French and Italian, has earned an ESL teaching certificate, traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States, and unashamedly devours television shows and books. The result of these pursuits is expertise in fashion, travel, beauty, literature, textbooks, and pop culture, in addition to whatever obsession consumes her next.
