Editor's Notes
June 30, 2020:
Much like cologne, aftershave is a very personal choice for a man. Some may prefer something with a very prominent fragrance that takes center stage, while others may rather have something that is completely unscented so as not to interfere with any other products they use. The same can be said for the feeling it produces on the skin. Some enjoy the strong burn alcohol-based aftershaves offer, while others gravitate towards more soothing options. To accommodate every gentleman, we made sure to include all kinds on our list.
If you want something that with a strong aroma that may completely negate the need to also use a cologne, we recommend the affordably priced Clubman Reserve Whiskey Woods or the masculine Coty Stetson Original. The former offers that tingling burn many men look for too. Proraso Refreshing and Toning is another option that produces an invigorating cooling sensation, though not so much so that it is uncomfortable, and which offers a scent that lasts for a quite a while.
If you are after a serious burn to help get your juices flowing in the morning, there are few better options that Fine Classic Snake Bite. It provides a strong sting from the alcohol, followed by powerful cooling sensation from the menthol. Some may not like the fragrance however, as it isn't very subtle.
Those who prefer something that is very soothing, while still offering some antiseptic properties will want to look to the balms on our list. These are L'Occitane Moisturizing Balm, The Art of Shaving Unscented Balm, Truefitt & Hill 1805,and Aramis Advanced Moisturizing Balm. L'Occitane Moisturizing Balm is scented with botanicals and makes use of birch tree extract for its astringent purposes, so it won't burn at all during application, while Truefitt & Hill 1805 is made with aloe and lanolin, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin or dryness issues. All of these spread easily and rub into the skin well, without leaving behind any kind of greasy feeling.
