Editor's Notes
August 06, 2019:
The American Academy of Pediatrics estimates that soy-based formulas in the U.S. account for nearly 25% of the baby formula market. Like traditional baby formulas, soy alternatives aim to provide for all of your infant’s nutritional needs – but without the lactose-based ingredients that might upset some little ones’ digestive systems. This selection of plant-based formulas is a lot smaller than those made from cow’s milk, but there are still a handful of viable options, including some organic ones.
Speaking of which, joining the selection in today’s update is Baby’s Only Organic, an FDA-certified choice that contains no corn syrup, palm oil, or GMO ingredients. This affordable option dissolves easily in water, and many a parent has touted its pleasant, baby-approved taste. You’ll also appreciate its BPA-free packaging that’s made from recycled materials. While it’s affordable in price, note that it only comes in small canisters, so you may want to stock up on multiple ones, depending on whether you’re primarily breast feeding or the formula is your only source of feeding.
As a rule, only start giving your baby soy formula after having a lengthy discussion with – and receiving the go-ahead from – your pediatrician, as this constitutes a drastic dietary change that may or may not be right for your child. On another safety-related note, never use a microwave to warm liquid baby formula, as hot pockets may form in the bottle that could result in serious burns.
Leaving our selection today are the Vermont Organics and Enfagrow Transitions formulas, due to their lack of availability.
