The 10 Best Battery Boxes
Special Honors
Dakota Lithium Power Box This battery was designed with kayaks and small fishing boats in mind. It comes with a 12-volt 10 amp-hour LiFePO4 battery preinstalled, a type of cell which is generally known to be even better than high quality lithium-ion cells. In addition to USB ports, a 12-volt accessory port, a status meter, and an LED flashlight, two exterior posts are included for hooking up solar panels or even powering small trolling motors. dakotalithium.com
Goal Zero Portable Power Stations There's no question that Goal Zero's products are expensive, but there aren't many other manufacturers out there who make ready-made portable power solutions that are as sleek or easy to use. These well designed boxes feature preinstalled SLA or lithium-ion batteries, USB ports, standard AC outlets, 12-volt DC outputs, solar panel inputs, and slick screens that help users keep track of their charge level. The company sells a wide range of models for different budgets and power needs. goalzero.com

When most people think of a battery box they think of basic plastic models like the Noco HM318, Attwood U1 Series, and Camco Standard. The beauty of these options is that they can be used as is if you're simply looking to better insulate your RV or boat's house battery system, but they can also be easily modified with things like disconnect switches, USB outlets, solar panels, and many other off-the-shelf components if you're trying to create a more advanced power system. For our selections we focused on specific sizes from each brand, but all three of these models are available in several common battery sizes.
If you would like to charge your phone or run 12-volt devices off of your battery but aren't interested in installing electrical components yourself, there are a few ready-made solutions on the market like the Newport Vessels Smart Power Center and the Universal Power Group 40790. Since they are mass produced the components on these models tend to be of a slightly cheaper quality than those that are available as separate parts for DIY boxes. However, many still find that they are happy with their build-quality, and find them to be perfect for using in their small fishing boat as a power source for a trolling motor or other small appliances. The Cutting Edge Power Portable is a bit of an exception since it uses very high-quality components, such as its solar charge controller and 500 watt inverter, but that this is reflected in its high cost. If you find that you would rather minimize the amount of electrical work you have to do yourself these options might be perfect for you, since all you will have to provide is a battery.
Cars usually don't have enough room for a battery box to be added in their stock configuration, but those who want a battery box for their custom car project, or specifically to bring their racing vehicle up to NHRA safety standards, should check out the Moroso Batt Box and the Taylor Cable 48100. These boxes are designed to provide a more snug fit for car batteries than the more basic type, which is essential for the high speeds and rough terrain a car may encounter, and both of these selections utilize a mounting system that allows for the box to be attached to the frame of the car for an ultra-secure hold. These options can also be installed in other types of vehicles, but be aware that they will generally require more custom work to be done than simplified models that already have pre-cut cable ports and mounting holes.
Whenever you are working with electrical systems that may expose you to high voltages and currents, there are few safety precautions that must be taken. Working while the circuit is disconnected is best if at all possible, and the usage of safety gloves can further help protect you from shocks.
