Editor's Notes

October 17, 2019:

The quality of your metal detector will greatly affect how much enjoyment you get out of treasure hunting, not to mention the size of your booty. Of course, not everybody wants to go out and spend a ton of money on one of these devices, especially if they are just getting into the hobby. Since Bounty Hunter is known for making affordable and reliable models with great detection capabilities, they are a great choice for many users.

During our most recent update, we found that nearly every one of our previously ranked models still warranted their place on the list. Part of this is because Bounty Hunter has not released that many new models, but also because they continue to get rave reviews from user. In fact, we only felt the need to remove the Quick Draw II, which we felt identifies junk as desirable materials too often and has a very limited depth range. It was replaced by the Quick Draw Pro, since this model offers significantly more features and consistently gets high marks for its effective discrimination capabilities.

Speaking of depth, for those who want a maximum detection range, we recommend the Discovery 3300, which is capable of finding large objects nearly four feet deep, and smaller objects like coins and rings as much as 11 inches below the ground. The Land Ranger Pro is also quite powerful, being able to find coins at depths of 10 inches. It also has the added benefit of seven search modes and four identification tones.

While some of the models on this list, including the Land Ranger Pro, Discovery 3300, and Time Ranger, have submersible coils, if you plan on doing any serious hunting in more than a couple of inches of water, we recommend you consider a waterproof metal detector.
