Editor's Notes

August 16, 2019:

Specifically designed to cut down the amount of both time and effort required, the Cuisipro Surface Glide has long grooves that reduce resistance and elongate the blades, so more food is grated with each stroke. Its base doubles as a grater that turns fresh ginger into a paste while leaving unwanted strands of fiber behind, and its nonslip handle and base provide a secure grip. The Spring Chef is a simple, inexpensive model with curved convex sides that allow it to hold a lot of food. It's dishwasher-safe and comes with a lifetime warranty, and it's also available in an extra-large size. The Utopia Kitchen has six sides for fine, coarse, and extra-coarse grating, slicing cheese and vegetables, and shaving Parmesan and chocolate, so you can customize the texture of your ingredients for any dish. It's lightweight, but sturdy, and it can be cleaned in the dishwasher, but hand-washing is recommended.

Some graters come with containers that can be attached to the bottom to collect food as you grate, so you don't have shredded cheese and vegetables all over your counter when you're done. The Oliver & Kline Stainless Steel is ergonomically designed to minimize strain and fatigue. Its plastic storage bowl comes with a lid, so you can save any extra gratings for later. Slimmer than most other graters, the Oxo Good Grips won't take up a ton of storage space and can fit into most drawers. The storage container has measurement markings in cups and milliliters, and the base and handle are both rubberized to give you a firm grip and prevent it from sliding around. The Progressive 2-Way can be use vertically or horizontally and has a two-cup measuring container that easily slides in and out. It has fine and medium grating surfaces, but the holes are on the small side, so it tends to produce shorter pieces, and the fine-bladed side can turn some ingredients into a paste or puree if you use too much pressure.
