This list still follows the rule from the last update: nothing loose in the crib, only toys that fasten to the rail or clip high on it. The Baby Einstein Sea Dreams stays on top. It's still the aquarium soother people ask about, and the look-alikes we found cost about the same while telling you far less about who made them or how they were tested. The Cloud b Sleep Sheep, Lamaze Freddie the Firefly, Infantino Hug & Tug and KiddoLab Lira stay too. The Baby Einstein Kick & Explore is new, a kick pad that ties to the slats for awake play.
We dropped the Fisher-Price Twinkle and Cuddle, Fisher-Price Settle and Sleep, Lamaze Discovering Shapes Gallery and Infantino Spiral because of availability concerns, and the Tumama Sensory because it dangles on loose straps. We found no lab tests of crib toys, so we weighed makers' age ratings and mounting rules, owner reports on noise, breakage and battery use, and recall records. For this update we made significant revisions to reflect the safety standards for the youngest babies who sleep in cribs. While some children aren't adventurous enough to try and escape their cribs and can sleep in them until they are three, the primary time nearly all babies use a crib is for the first 12 months. Because of concerns about SIDS, experts recommend that babies up to 12 months have nothing in the crib that could obstruct the airway.
With this in mind we only included toys that secure to the rails, and have no strings longer than six inches. Plush friends and other loveys can be introduced later with older babies. Hanging mobiles are also soothing and stimulating, but they must be removed as soon as baby can push up to hands and knees. Our selection of crib toys can be used into the toddler years.
A popular crib toy for the youngest infants is the aquarium like the Baby Einstein Sea Dreams and the Fisher Price Settle and Sleep. There is no real water, but the ocean themes include calming water noises that are perfect for sending babies to dreamland. While the Fisher Price Settle and Sleep includes overhead projection that the Baby Einstein does not, we placed the Baby Einstein in the top spot because it features a remote control, which is vital for turning the unit back on undetected if your baby sometimes needs longer than 25 minutes to fall asleep.

Pediatricians are blunt about the first year. The American Academy of Pediatrics says a fitted sheet is the only thing that belongs in the crib with a baby under 1, and it lists toys, pillow-like toys and bumper pads among the things to keep out (HealthyChildren.org). The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the same thing: a baby sleeps safest flat on their back with no pillows, blankets or toys in the sleep space (CPSC).
That's why every toy here fastens to the rail or clips high on it. A soother belongs on the outside of the rail or on a nearby dresser, and a plush soother like a sound-machine lamb should stay there until the first birthday. Follow the mounting rules to the letter. Baby Einstein says the Sea Dreams must sit at least 7 inches above the mattress, held only by its own straps, with no added cords, and that an adjustable crib side should be locked in its highest position while the baby is inside (Target product Q&A).
Clip-on and kick toys are for awake, supervised time. Take them down before naps and at night, and skip any toy with a loose string or cord a baby could reach.
Soothers: Timers, Remotes And Batteries
A soother works as a bedtime cue, not a sleep treatment. We found no clinical or lab study of these products, so treat any promise that one will make a baby sleep through the night as marketing.
The features that matter are the timer, the remote and the power source. The Sea Dreams plays for 25 minutes or more, fades its lights and sound every 10 minutes, and has a remote that works from up to 12 feet, so a parent can restart it from the doorway. It runs on four C cells in the unit and two AAA cells in the remote, none included (Target), and owners often say it goes through them quickly, so rechargeable C cells are worth a look. The Sleep Sheep is simpler: eight sounds, a 23- or 45-minute shutoff and two AA cells, with no lights or remote.
Keep the volume low and the speaker away from the baby's head. A soother that's loud enough to hear across the room is louder than it needs to be at the crib rail.
Aquarium Dupes And Look-Alikes
Searches for a cheaper version of the Baby Einstein aquarium turn up a crowd of near-identical soothers from little-known sellers. The ones we checked cost about the same as the original and list no maker, model number, battery details or dimensions. They also don't mention safety testing, which matters for a product made for newborns.
In the U.S., any product made mainly for children 12 or younger needs a Children's Product Certificate from its maker or importer, based on tests by a CPSC-accepted third-party lab (CPSC). A known brand with a model number makes it easier to look up that information and to check for recalls later. Crib soothers do get recalled: in 2008, Kids II recalled 15,000 Baby Einstein Baby Neptune Soothing Seascape crib toys, an older model, because the anchors holding the straps could detach and become a choking hazard (CPSC). We found no recalls for any toy on this list.
If saving money is the goal, a simple clip-on toy for awake time costs far less than any aquarium soother, and it doesn't need batteries.
