A pen pad now leads this list. The XPPen Note Plus senses your writing through any A5 notebook, so you're not stuck buying one company's dotted paper, and it costs less than most true smart pens. The Huion Note works the same way and adds audio and a drawing-tablet mode.
The old favorite, the Livescribe Symphony, can't be bought new anymore, and Livescribe's own store shows nothing in stock. The Moleskine Pen+ Ellipse gave way to the Moleskine Smart Writing Set. The Neo Smartpen N2, the 2011-era Livescribe Echo and the iskn Repaper are gone too. The Livescribe Aegir and Neo Smartpen M1+ stay because nothing replaces tap-to-replay audio or a pen-only setup, but both are in short supply.
The evidence here was the makers' spec pages for XPPen, Huion, Neo and inq, the app feature lists (text languages, audio sync, export formats), a 2023 independent comparison that covered the older smart pens, and a recall search for every brand, which turned up nothing. The list stops at seven because the rest of the field is look-alike pen-and-notebook kits with little more than seller claims behind them.

Digital pens can make taking and referencing notes much more efficient. Some, like the iskn Repaper and Neo Smartpen N2 are ideal for artists because they can register various pressure levels, which equate to different line thicknesses when digitized. We feel the Livescribe Symphony is one of the best simply because it perfectly pairs performance with price. It feels just like a normal pen, registers more than 20 languages, and can sync notes with audio you record via the app on your smart device. Be aware though, that most of these require the purchase of special paper or notepads to work, however some, like the Neo M1+ and Neo Smartpen N2 do allow you to print your own.

In a pretty volatile category, only three of our previous ranking's models remain on this current list. Most others have been phased out by their companies, or their companies have folded altogether. Moleskine's combination smart pen and notepad earned the top spot for being the most effective option, even though the fact that you have to buy their notebooks to use the system locks you into the brand. The ThinkPen by Sanb has emerged as perhaps the most enticing budget option, and its ability to work with both Android and iOS is a nice surprise for its price point. Livescribe continues to be the most viable company in the category, with three entries representing it, though their less expensive offerings seem to struggle with handwriting-to-text conversion and to have a noticeably cheaper build.

The trade-off is bulk: you carry a folio with a battery inside instead of just a pen. If you already like a certain paper, or you fill notebooks fast, the pad type saves money. If you want to slip a pen into a pocket and write on whatever notebook is handy, a camera pen still needs its own paper, so keep a spare notebook with it.

XPPen doesn't promise text conversion for the Note Plus at all, so check your language and your handwriting style before you buy.
Audio is the other big feature. Livescribe, Huion, Moleskine, inq and Ophaya let you record on your phone while you write, then tap a line to hear what was said at that moment. Recording a class or a meeting can need permission: some states require everyone's consent, and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press keeps a state-by-state guide. Many schools set their own rules too.
Finally, your notes live in the maker's app and often its cloud. Livescribe's US store (Livescribe) currently lists only two pens, both sold out, which shows how fast this market moves. Export your pages to PDF or a cloud folder you control every so often, so your notes outlast any one app.
Battery, Storage And Care
Battery life on paper is close across the field. Neo rates the M1+ at roughly 14 to 17 hours of writing, XPPen rates the Note Plus at about 14 hours, and Huion rates the Huion Note at about 18. Offline storage differs far more: the M1+ holds about 1,000 pages without a phone nearby, while both pen pads hold about 50, so sync a pad after every long session.
Pens and pads charge over USB and hold small lithium batteries, so treat them like a phone: use a decent cable, don't leave them charging on a bed or under papers, and stop using one that swells or gets hot. A search of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall database turned up no recalls for any brand on this list.
Ink refills are cheap but specific. The XPPen pen uses a common D1-size refill, while most camera pens take the maker's own short refills, so buy a spare pack with the pen. Keep dot paper away from heat and direct sun, since a faded or smudged pattern can stop the camera from reading it.
