Editor's Notes

February 19, 2019:

Unlike many other telescopes, Dobsonians provide a simple set of optics on a basic mount. Yet thanks to their large apertures, these “light buckets” are often capable of bringing you the faintest and farthest of objects. This type of scope was first created in the 1960s by John Dobson, who originally made homemade ones from household materials and mirrors. Now, they’re widely sold in stores and online. The Orion 8944, Sky-Watcher S11610, and Zhumell Z8 all fared well on our list due to their sharp focus, steady picture, and portability. If you’re looking for some extra help finding destinations in the night sky, the computerized Orion 10018 can point you right to them, when you enter the coordinates. If you want a more budget-friendly model, however, some do come with helpful software and guides, like the Orion 8945 and Orion 10014. Alternatively, there are plenty of free apps for your smartphone that will help you locate points on the celestial plane.
