A Brief History Of Dopp Kits
The Dopp kit is a name synonymous with the "toilet bag" in the United States, its original name before the accessory was first trademarked. But what was the problem with this early nomenclature in American culture? Although the toilet is necessary for answering those calls of nature, its meaning took on a rather dirty connotation. The name of the Dopp kit is actually derived from German-born leather craftsman Charles Doppelt, whose company designed its first leather bag back in 1926. Doppelt's kits were widely distributed to soldiers in the United States military during both World War I and World War II.
Samsonite purchased Doppelt's company decades later in the 1970s in order to produce and register a trademark on the invention. By that time, the Dopp kit was considered a popular gift item for adolescent males, symbolic of a boy's entrance into adulthood and independence.
Today, the benefits of the Dopp kit can be seen in the variety of its color, shape, and materials.
