The 9 Best Electric Standing Desks
Editor's Notes
September 09, 2020:
Research has shown that just like sitting too much can be harmful to your health, standing all day can also cause health issues. The solution, according to recent studies, is to alternate between the two throughout the day. This practice has been gaining popularity throughout the business world, and Apple CEO Tim Cook has instructed his employees to do the same, supplying them with electric standing desks like the ones we've included here.
The ideal balance, according to a 2013 study, recommends a ratio of 1:1 or 2:1, sitting vs standing. So every hour you spend sitting, you should stand for an hour or two. These studies seem to still be in the early stages, and you should always listen to your own body when it comes to discomfort or injuries, but they're a good jumping-off point.
All of our options are fairly straightforward when it comes to assembly, but keep in mind, they can be extremely heavy. Larger options like the ApexDesk Elite and Vari 60 will end up weighing well over 100 pounds, and will require two or more people to assemble. Most options offer an expert assembly service for a fee, and unless you've got strong help you can count on, it's worth the extra money. Even once you get the heavy frame assembled, picking up a 70-pound desktop and muscling it into position is a recipe for a back or shoulder injury.
If an electric standing desk seems a bit too intimidating, consider one of these height adjustable desks instead. They provide similar height options, but with manual controls instead of electric motors.
Also, if you're interested in maximizing your desks surface area, consider using a monitor arm. These eliminate the need for your monitors to be on your desk altogether, freeing up valuable desktop real estate. Just make sure to confirm that whichever desk you choose can handle the weight and installation.
