The 10 Best Footlockers

Updated October 06, 2019 by Melissa Harr

This wiki has been updated 23 times since it was first published in December of 2016. Gone are the days when no household was complete without a rugged steamer trunk to store and transport one's belongings, but the usefulness of this classic luggage option certainly hasn't diminished. Whether it's a vintage leather-bound design or a contemporary molded plastic case, a sturdy footlocker is a practical choice for college students, military personnel, and intrepid travelers alike. When users buy our independently chosen editorial picks, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. Special Honors

Pelican Mobile Office If you or someone you know is particularly hard on storage containers, the Pelican Mobile Office could be the answer to your — or their — prayers. Boasting a rotomolded polyethylene exterior, it's made to take abuse no matter where it goes. pelican.com

ECS Case Loadmaster Heavy-duty storage and transport are serious business for the ECS Case Loadmaster, which includes reinforced, removable trays; ergonomic handles; a watertight gasket; and a pressure relief valve to prevent moisture from getting in or contents from being damaged in transit. ecscomposites.com

West Elm Emmerson Wood Storage Bench Even though the West Elm Emmerson Wood Storage Bench is functional and practical, there's nothing bland about its design. Made from reclaimed pine, each piece is unique and has a rustic look that will harmonize well with natural décor. westelm.com

Editor's Notes

October 03, 2019:

For those who need dependability and travel-readiness, it is still hard to top both the Rhino Indestructo and the DormCo Iron Brick. These are not cheap, but they have the rugged construction that ensures they're worth the cost. We've opted to add a waterproof choice as a top option, as well, the Pelican Storm. It may be a bit much for casual, around-the-home use, but for anyone on the go in rough environments, it's a reliable choice. For a budget-friendly alternative to these robust models, we've kept the Sterilite 1842 and the C&N Happy Camper. The former functions well in the place of a plastic storage bin, while the latter makes a good trunk for a dorm or kid's bedroom.

Finally, we elected to add the Songmics Ottoman, even though it's not technically a footlocker. It offers similar storage capabilities but is foldable, so you can get it out of the way, if need be. You probably shouldn't plan to use it for travel, though, as it isn't made to close securely.

October 16, 2018:

Updated to incorporate more diverse options for storage and transport, including decorative, weatherproof, impact-resistant and travel-friendly cases — with both wheeled and stackable units.
