September 23, 2020:
We made a handful of changes to our selection during this update, including removing the XiangLv School, ArtLife All Levels, and SanSiDo Precision due to availability issues. And while this is a category where it can be tricky to find extremely durable tools, we did our best to source those of reliable quality, with metal compasses and reusable cases that can stand being carted around in a backpack. We still kept budget options like the PenVinoo Drawing around for those who will be using their kit sparingly, though.
Plastic is extremely popular when it comes to school rulers, but we know how rewarding and practical stainless steel can be, so we added the Staedtler Mars Combination, which have cork over one side to keep them steady and raise them just enough to prevent them from scratching up your paper. The downside is the cork covers extra space where more measurement markings could've gone.
While the items here are intended mainly for bundling with your geometry books for class, we prioritized some multifunctional kits that are handy for artists and engineering students, like the Ferocious Viking Drafting. This one is ideal when you need compasses that allow you to create a wide range of circles both big and small.
We also brought on the elegant Helix Oxford Mathematical, a sturdy and attractive set that hails from the UK. It contains durable components that include a safety point compass and a pencil sharpener with an anti-tamper screw that stops kids from getting to the blade. The eraser is also PVC, phthalate, and latex-free. The ruler is equipped with inch and centimeter markings, however, the triangles only use centimeters, so bear that in mind if you're not willing to deal with any conversions whatsoever. If you're looking for an extra math challenge or will be working with both systems of units, then this might be an upside.

The Mr. Pen Essential earned a top spot due to its versatility, as it boasts a wide range of items, each of which is a high-quality piece of equipment. It might be overkill for some courses, but the price isn't likely to torpedo your budget, so the extra pieces should be welcome.
On the other end of the spectrum you'll find the RosyLife Drawing. There's not much in this kit, just a compass and a few rulers, but that's all that's necessary in most beginning classes. Everything inside is well-made, so if you're certain you'll have no need for additional items, it represents a good budget option.
If your initial thought is that the offering from Ferocious Viking seems like it should be ranked higher, we don't blame you. Everything looks sturdy and durable, and it is — but it's also fairly heavy. The compass can be a little moody as well, as it occasionally moves at unwanted times, but that can help students learn new four-letter words in addition to new mathematical theorems.
