Editor's Notes

September 15, 2020:

Hands-free breast pumps are a godsend for nursing mothers who also need to multitask. Whether you need a portable machine for the office, or are looking for something that frees you up to tend to household chores, this list features a variety of selections to make your life easier.

In updating our ranking from last year, we confirmed that most of our selections have withstood the test of time. The Spectra S1 continues to be a stand-out favorite of new mothers, due to its reliability, convenience, and programmable electronic controls. We decided to remove the Spectra S2 however, since it requires women to be near a power outlet while pumping. We also removed the Freemie Cups, since it isn't actually a full pump system.

These deletions made room for two new in-bra choices, the Willow Wearable, which is a solid pick, though it can be tricky to operate, and the Elvie Double Electric, which uses similar technology but is more reliable and truly allows women to move around while expressing.

Finally, we decided to swap the Medela In Style Advanced for the Medela Freestyle Flex, which offers a bit more freedom and charges with a USB cord instead of a bulky battery pack.

If portability is not your main concern, there are other options to consider, like those found on our hospital grade breast pumps ranking. For effectively feeding your infant all that sweet expressed milk, we also suggest researching our bottles for breastfed babies list.

January 08, 2019:

Every model on this list is capable of being used hands-free, whether due to suction power or compatibility with a nursing bra. After that, we ranked units based on efficiency, durability, comfort, and value for money. Placed the Spectra models at the top spots because of their popularity and high quality, and added the Toogel Electric for moms who need something reliable, yet budget-friendly.
