August 16, 2020:
When putting together this list of hoverboards for kids, we realized that the term "kids" encompasses a wide age range, and we wanted to make sure we included options to suit both teens and tweens, as well as slightly younger children between 8 and 10 years of age. That being said, it is important that you follow the manufacturer's recommended usage guidelines regarding rider age, and also ensure that anyone operating one of these hoverboards wears a safety helmet, regardless of age and skill level.
If choosing a model for a young child, you'll either want to get one that has a low maximum speed, such as the Hyper GoGo Off Road, which maxes out at just 6 MPH, or one that has different modes for varying skill levels, such as the Razor Hovertrax 2.0, Tomoloo K1, and Hover-1 Titan. The Gyroor F1 Warrior also features multiple riding modes, but because it is so heavy, it is best suited to teens who will have the ability to carry it home if the battery dies when they are out riding.
Since it can be fun to drive over varying terrains, we included off-road models like the Hyper GoGo Off Road, Swagtron Swagboard Outlaw T6, and Gyroor Warrior, all of which are equipped with large, aggressively-treaded tires and have powerful motors capable of propelling them up steep inclines.
When it comes to anything for a child, price is obviously going to be important. There is no question that most kids are rough on their items, and their interest in things often doesn't last long enough to make it worthwhile to spend a lot. With that in mind, we have added the Swagboard Twist T882 and Flying Ant F1, both of which are very affordably priced.
The Segway Ninebot S stands apart from all the rest of the models on this list due to the inclusion of a knee bar that some may find makes it easier than others to steer. It also doubles as a handle to make transport of the machine a bit more convenient when not actively riding it.

Special care must be taken when selecting hoverboards for kids. If you have an older child, say early to mid teens, you will want to opt for one of the faster models and those with longer ranges, such as the Swagtron Swagboard Outlaw T6, Ninebot S, and Gyroor F1 Warrior. Younger children will be better of with slower models, such as the Swagtron Swagboard Vibe T580 or GoTrax Ion. Kids in the 11 to 13 age range who you think might want a little more speed, but you feel aren't quite ready for the fastest models, would be well served with the Hyper GoGo Cruiser, Cho Spider Wheels Series, and Tomoloo K1. If you want one that is suitable for younger kids, but fast enough that you or an older child will enjoy riding too, consider the Gyroor F1 Warrior or Ninebot S, which are quick, but feature a child-safety or training mode that locks them at a lower speed. Whichever model you do choose, make sure to always follow the manufacturer's recommended guidelines regarding age limitations.
