Cal 7 Complete Fishtail This board is made with five layers of maple wood and two layers of bamboo for extra strength. It features an unusual cutout tail and 65mm 78A wheels. If you're looking for something flashy, this probably isn't the board for you, but if you're a no-frills kind of rider, you're likely to appreciate this design. walmart.com

Retrospec Rift The Retrospec Rift boasts a 41-inch-long deck with a drop-through shape that mitigates the risk of its wheels getting caught on obstacles such as uneven pavement. It's incredibly responsive to subtle shifts in weight distribution, which makes it one of the most steerable options out there. tillys.com

Razor X DLX Are you interested in skateboarding but not so much physical activity? If so, this electric entry will probably appeal to you. It comes with a compact wireless remote control that can be used to adjust speed and direction (yes, it can go in reverse). target.com

Editor's Notes

September 12, 2020:

As with any wheeled mode of transportation, longboards are inherently dangerous, and that's true even for the best skaters among us. It goes without saying that you should wear protective gear when you ride. If you don't have anything to guard your body should a spill occur, you would be wise to invest in a skateboard helmet first and foremost. Then, look into protecting yourself further with elbow pads, knee pads, and the like.

When it comes to updates, the Ten Toes Zed, Shark Wheel Fathom, Street Surfing Kicktail, and Ancheer Pintail have been removed due to concerns about quality and availability. In place of those items we've added the Magneto Kicktail, MBS All-Terrain, Black Longboards Collection Exotic, and Kryptonics Spongebob. These new entries were chosen because of their durable construction, maneuverability, and aesthetically pleasing designs. In fact, two of them — the Magneto Kicktail and MBS All-Terrain — now occupy the top two slots in the list.

January 23, 2019:

Added the Bamboo Pintail Tiki Man for its flexible deck, elegant inlay work, and extra-wide wheelbase for superior stability. Also included the Shark Wheel Fathom for its dropped platform, which lowers a rider's center of gravity, as well as its wave-designed wheels that serve to limit friction on a variety of terrains. The risers and wheel wells on the Quest Super Cruiser provide additional ground clearance and also work to prevent sudden stops, so it's a great option for downhill racing. I also thought the Yocaher Spirit Wolf had an especially attractive design, while its durable alloy trucks withstand rough use. Also included the Sanview Cruiser due to its quick break-in time and ability to handle sharp turns. Finally, the Volador Freeride offers an eco-friendly construction, while its reverse kingpin trucks can be adjusted to one of two angles to support a variety of riding styles.
