Editor's Notes

September 16, 2020:

It's no mystery why stainless-steel measuring spoons are some of the most popular. Not only are they durable and long lasting, but they usually feature markings that are permanently etched in metal. This presents an advantage over spoons with printed measurements, as these tend to wear away long before the utensil itself gives out. However, not all stainless-steel sets are made the same. For instance the 1Easylife 18/8 is on the less expensive side of things when it comes to metal measuring spoons, and while they are definitely adequate for most people's cooking needs they show clear differences when compared to a high-end set like the All-Clad 59918. These more expensive spoons feature a noticeably finer polish, and are made from 18/10 steel that offers superior rust resistance and a generally higher quality than the 18/8 steel utilized by many less expensive sets. Those that enjoy the benefits of a stainless-steel set but find their frequently thin handles are uncomfortable may want to look at the Fsdifly Stackable, which is similar to the aforementioned models but features the addition of large silicone pads.

Despite the advantages offered by metal selections there are still many reasons why someone might prefer a plastic set. They are generally cheaper and their material allows for more style variation, which is exemplified by models like the KitchenAid Classic Set and Progressive International BA-510. If you think you won't be using your spoons extremely frequently a plastic set is probably perfectly adequate, and you won't have to worry about stains or rubbed-off markings for quite awhile.

Though the classic spherical bowl design is common and effective, there are cases where a utensil with an elongated bowl such as the Spring Chef Heavy Duty Set might be more optimal. This narrower and shallower design fits much more easily into containers with small openings, such as spice jars. If you would prefer to have both types on hand it's worth considering double sided options such as the Spring Chef Magnetic Set and Progressive International BA-510. These selections provide both spherical and elongated bowls, however some may find them less comfortable to handle due to the lack of a proper handle. They also save space compared to having a set of each type of spoon, but if compactness is your primary concern you would be even more appreciative of the KitchenArt Adjustable, which uses a sliding mechanism to allow one spoon to switch between several measurements.

Whether you're an avid chef or simply cook to put food on the table, having high-quality tools makes the task a lot easier and more enjoyable. In addition to measuring spoons, you may also want to check out our lists on the top 10 measuring cups, mixing bowls, and cooking utensil sets as well.
