Editor's Notes

November 22, 2020:

In this update we removed Mold Armor FG532 due to availability concerns and replaced it with Mold Armor FG502, which is just as good for all-around bathroom cleaning. We also removed Envirocare 5520 and Mold Monster due to availability concerns.

We added Rust-Oleum 276087, a white paint primer that also attacks mold and mildew and delays its return. We also added RMR-141 Disinfectant, an EPA-registered choice that's great when paired with RMR-86 Instant, which removes mold stains after RMR-141 kills the organism.

Be advised that many of the options on this list contain bleach and other abrasive chemicals which produce fumes that are dangerous if inhaled. You should make sure to wear a mask and gloves whenever removing mold, both to avoid exposure to these fumes and to keep from inhaling the dangerous microorganisms you're trying to get rid of.

If you're hoping to clean out your house but are concerned about handling such powerful and reactive cleaning agents, check out our list of enzyme-based cleaners, which aren't nearly as toxic to humans or pets.

December 21, 2018:

Most of the selections on the list are focused on surface-borne infestations, such as the ones you'd find on walls, wooden joists, or shower doors. However, we included some other options that are excellent at treating problems in fabric. In addition, care was given to ensure that both small- and large-scale solutions were available.
