Though many hoverboards claim to be suitable for off-road use, we think it takes more than just attaching a pair of tires with aggressive tread, which is why this list is limited in the number of models we included. In addition to having good tread, we believe any all-terrain hoverboard also needs to have a powerful motor that can push it up inclines, and tires that are at least 8.5 inches in size to provide enough ground clearance that it won't be hindered by rocks and other small obstacles in your path.
In regards to tire size, the Hover-1 Charger and Hover-1 Titan lead the pack, both boasting wheels of 10 inches in diameter. While similar, the former is slightly more rugged, offers better traction, and has more powerful motors, so we feel it is a better choice overall. While on the subject of motors, neither of the aforementioned models compares to the Epikgo Classic, which has dual 400-watt motors.
We feel the Gyroor Warrior G2 probably does the best job of balancing cost and performance. While it isn't the fastest, that title goes to the Swagtron Swagboard Outlaw T6, which tops out at 12 miles per hour, it does have a respectable maximum speed of 10 miles per hour. Both of these models can power up slopes as steep as 30 degrees, however the Warrior G2 is more affordable and appears to have a better build quality, which is important for a machine that is expected to constantly travel over rough terrain.
For kids, we like the Xprit All-Terrain because it doesn't go too fast and comes for a budget-friendly price. That being said, we have actually complied an entire list of hoverboards suitable for kids, which may be worth checking out.
Whichever model you choose, and whether you plan on riding it yourself or if you are buying it for a teen, it is important that whoever uses it wears proper safety gear, which should include a helmet and knee and elbow pads.

Using a hoverboard's gyroscopic stabilization system to maintain your balance on uneven surfaces can be a tricky skill set to master, so these models feature all-terrain tires for better traction, intelligent braking systems, wide riding platforms, and intuitive app integration to smooth out the rough edges a bit. High-visibility lights, reinforced battery casings, UL-certified electronics and weather-resistant designs also help improve safety in various riding conditions.
