June 06, 2020:
Natural mouthwashes can be a smart alternative to the chemical-filled kind you find at your local pharmacy. They are, potentially, just as effective, and should be considerably more gentle on the enamel of your teeth.
We have included two kinds of mouthwashes on this list. The first are ones that you swish around your mouth for a short 30 or 60 seconds after brushing, much like you do with Listerine or Scope. These are BioPro PerioClear, PerioSciences AO ProRinse Sensitive, Lucky Plus Whitening, Dr. Arenander's Healthy Teeth & Gum, and Lumineux Oral Essentials Whitening. In addition to freshening the breath and killing harmful bacteria, some of these options offer other benefits as well. For example, PerioClear may be able to speed up the healing of small mouth irritations and gum disease, while AO ProRinse Sensitive is supposed to fortify the natural defenses of your saliva, which may offer a host of benefits from preventing tooth decay to killing disease-causing bacteria. As you can probably guess from the name, Lucky Plus Whitening and Lumineux Oral Essentials Whitening may brighten your teeth a few shades and help you get those pearly whites everyone wants.
Essential Oxygen BR Rinse is an interesting option in that it is designed to be used as a before brushing rinse, so make sure to reach for it before picking up that toothbrush. It is also great for rinsing the nasty bacteria out of your mouth after you wake up in the morning, so you don't swallow it all when you take a sip of water.
The other kind of mouthwashes we included are oil pulls. These are Banyan Botanicals Daily Swish, Masigi Fresh Pulling Oil, Living Libations Happy Gum Drops + Oil Swishing Serum, and Dale Audrey Ayurvedic Oil Pulling Rinse. Unlike the previously mentioned rinses that you only need to swish around your mouth for a short time, oil pulls are meant to be left in your mouth for anywhere from five to 20 minutes. Oil pulling is a traditional Ayurvedic practice, and while the science is still out on how effective this technique truly is, it has continued to be performed for thousands of years, so perhaps there is something to it.
