Editor's Notes
December 15, 2020:
When selecting our pet scales, we considered the frustrations animal owners can face when trying to weigh finicky fur babies that won't stay still, and looked for features that would alleviate those. We also sought out models that offer variety in their readings, providing results in ounces, pounds, and kilograms. Robust materials were additionally important, as was the overall user-friendliness of a product's design.
Offering models that can weigh both the smallest of pets to some of the largest domestic animals was one of our goals. On that note, we have the compact Pets Island Digital Puppy Kitty for the literal fur babies in your life, as well as the Prime Scales PS-AS700 for livestock owners.
Since pets don't always stay still for their weigh-ins, we appreciated the high walls of the Zieis BigTop to contain squirmy animals, as well as the hold function of the Salter 914WHLKR. The W.C. Redmon ZT7400 18 also stood out because its low-profile design is easy for senior animals to step onto, and its texturized surface keeps them from slipping. We decided to remove the TeaTime TT-DB01 because it tips over too easily.
A couple of other features stood out to us for their overall convenience, like the measuring tape of the Beurer BY90 and the wall-mountable display of the IBE Supply Veterinarian Digital.
October 09, 2019:
Since most pets aren't known for their ability to sit still for long periods of time when you want them to, we made sure to find scales that returned results quickly and which had smart features to help keep animals contained. For example, the Zieis BigTop, Kazetec Multi-Function, TeaTime TT-DB01, and Taylor Salter 914-WHLKR all feature platforms with raised sides that may deter an animal from trying to escape. Unlike the aforementioned models, the W.C Redmon ZT7400 14 took the opposite approach and has a platform with ends that slope downwards to make it more comfortable for your pet, going with the theory that the more comfortable a pet is, the more likely it is to sit still.
We also realize that many people may not want dedicated scales for the animals and people in their homes, so we included models like the OneTwoThree LCD, Kazetec Multi-Function, and TeaTime TT-DB01, which do triple duty as baby and standard bathroom scales, too.
For those whose profession requires they regularly weigh large breeds, like vets and perhaps some groomers, we included the W.C. Redmon ZT7400 18, IBE Supply Veterinarian, and Prime Scales PS-AS700, which have a 220-, 660-, and 700-pound maximum capacity, respectively. However, if even these models are too small for your needs, then we recommend you check out our list of the best livestock scales.
