This wiki has been updated 17 times since it was first published in January of 2020. Purchasing any large appliance, especially a refrigerator, can be a daunting task, partly because there are so many styles to choose from, such as French door and counter depth versions. They come in sizes to suit whole families or just one or two people, with optional features like water and ice dispensers, tempered glass shelves, and low-noise compressors, to name a few. When users buy our independently chosen editorial picks, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Editor's Notes

April 09, 2021:

For full-size fridges able to accommodate large families, you might first consider buying in person, as that's where many of the most reliable and effective models are. One exception to that rule is the Frigidaire Gallery, which is as nice a mid-range option as is available in any appliance store. The Frigidaire FFHT1425VV is of similar high quality, but it's smaller ad doesn't have an ice or water dispenser. For something even slimmer and more efficient, check out the Galanz GLR12TS5F.

Most of the readily available models, however, aren't meant to be the main fridge in a family kitchen. The TackLife MVSFR321 is a typical mini fridge that also happens to be quiet and reliable, and the Daewoo FR-044is worth considering if appearance is as important to you as performance. We also like the Whynter UDF-139SS for specialized applications like entertaining guests or storing and processing game meat, as it can switch easily between refrigeration and high-speed freezing.

February 19, 2020:

There is a lot more to choosing a refrigerator than simply making a color choice. Since white is a neutral color that fits into almost any homes' color palette, we created this list by focusing on the specific components of each appliance. Size matters when it comes to storing food, so we included the cubic space of each model. We also paid attention to available options like door bins, adjustable shelving, and temperature controls.

We included freezer on top models, such as the Frigidaire Freestanding, along with French door styles, like the Daewoo French Door. We even included compact options, like the Daewoo Retro.

Special Honors

LG Appliances A far cry from their world-renowned televisions, LG appliances, and specifically their refrigerators, have received high praise from maintenance professionals for the last few years. They aren't exactly cheap, but there are some mid-range models available, and if you need something that can stand up to a busy family, LG is a great company to start with. lg.com

Whirlpool Kitchen Basically a household name in terms of appliances, Whirlpool continues to make some of the best fridges on the market. In fact, if you're leaning strongly toward a French door model, you'll be hard-pressed to find one of higher quality than what you'll find with this reliable manufacturer. Their offerings range from reasonably priced all the way to ultra-premium. whirlpool.com
