The 10 Best Step Lights

Updated July 24, 2019 by Gia Vescovi-Chiordi

This wiki has been updated 15 times since it was first published in July of 2019. It’s easy to trip when navigating an unlit stairway in the dark, which is why it’s worth investing in some step lights. We’ve selected models designed for both indoor and outdoor applications, including options that are rechargeable or powered by solar energy, many of which are suitable for use as nightlights and in closets and cabinets, too. Note that some may require professional installation. When users buy our independently chosen editorial picks, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. The Mouse Lite Square is made for vertical surface mounting in gardens and landscapes, and is outfitted with a stainless steel reflector for better projection of its 120-degree beam. The design includes a cable joint cavity, so there's no need for extra space behind the wall for cable connections. hunzalighting.com

Editor's Notes

July 18, 2019:

Home and business owners require step lights for two purposes: safety and aesthetics. To cater to both, we curated a list that had selections of varying light and color output in designs that are neutral, industrial, modern, and antique. If your chief concern is illuminating your back or front yard, a set of path lights and an outdoor post light can work wonders when used in conjunction with step lights.

Installation is important when it comes to lighting, so we included units that can be mounted anywhere without wires, such as the Brilliant Evolution Wireless, in addition to wired units like the Cloudy Bay Vertical.

As far as power source goes, you'll find solar-powered models (LeiDrail 1800K), battery-powered (Mr. Beams Motion-Sensing), rechargeable battery-powered (OxyLED Safe Night), and power switch operated (FVTLED Low Voltage, GKOLED Hardscape Paver, Cloudy Bay 120V, etc). Additional desirable features included motion sensor activation, a technology that nearly half of our selections use.

We want to stress that for the units on this list that require wired installations, do not attempt to do so on your own unless you are a professional. Not only is it possible to damage your fixtures with an unprofessional install, but you put yourself at risk of electric shock as well.
