When it comes to pickup trucks, one of their biggest advantages also seems to be one of their biggest drawbacks. The open bed is great for transporting large equipment, furniture, and other items, but it also means that anything in the back is open to the weather and potentially subject to theft. That's where the tonneau covers on this list can help. They protect anything in the bed from rain and other inclement weather, and offer some level of theft deterrence.
Obviously, hard models like the RetraxPro XR, Bak Revolver X2, BakFlip MX4, Rugged Liner E-Series Hard, and Undercover ArmorFlex are going to offer the most security for stuff in your cargo space. That being said, they are also generally quite pricey and, depending on the model, not without their drawbacks. For example, the Rugged Liner E-Series Hard doesn't allow full access to the bed, since the final panel doesn't open up, and the Bak Revolver X2, which we are big fans of, does block some of the bed, though it is a minimal amount. As you can imagine hard models are also heavier than their soft counterparts. That being said, on the options that do allow full access to the bed, such as the RetraxPro XR, BakFlip MX4, and Undercover ArmorFlex, there really is very little reason you'll ever need to completely remove them after the initial installation, so there the weight probably won't matter much.
When it comes to soft models, they come in two varieties, roll-up and folding. The latter, like the TruXedo Lo Pro, allow for full access to the bed, but take a little more time and can sometimes be a bit of a hassle to open up and secure, whereas panel models, such as the Tyger Auto T3, Extang Trifecta 2.O, and Tonno Pro Soft Tri-Fold are as quick and easy as their hard counterparts. Another downside to soft models is their limited security. They act more as a visual deterrent, since somebody could cut through them with a knife if they were determined.
If you are in the mood to kit out your truck, there are a number of other automotive accessories that can add to the comfort, functionality, and style of your vehicle. For example, you might want to pick up some mats for the interior to keep the floor in good condition, or perhaps a mat for the bed to protect both it and whatever equipment you are loading into it.

We listed a hard and soft model in our top two spots since the differences between the two largely come down to personal preference. Hard covers offer more protection against thieves, but they're also heavier and more difficult to manipulate. Just know that, if you prefer a soft cover, the MaxMate Roll Up is as worthy of the top spot as the Tyger Auto T3.
We liked how the Truxedo TruXport has integrated tension control, which makes it easy to keep everything taut and secure for long car trips. This is an extremely useful feature, since bubbling is not only unattractive, but can also let the elements inside.
Every option listed here should be compatible with most Tacomas, but if you have a bed liner or similar accessory you should check to make sure that the two will work together. Also, most of these come in either 5- or 6-foot models, so measure your bed before buying.
