The 10 Best Wire Fishing Tools

Updated February 26, 2021 by Will Rhoda

This wiki has been updated 21 times since it was first published in October of 2018. There are few things in life that can be as frustrating as trying to force a long stretch of cable through a hole in your wall. These wire fishing tools can help with that, by attaching to conductors so you can push or pull them through your work space, saving you from having to spend hours fighting with unruly lines. If you work with electricity, though, make sure you're wary of the steel models. When users buy our independently chosen editorial selections, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki. Editor's Notes

February 24, 2021:

It was a straightforward round of updates, as all of our previous picks continued to be great choices for the category. We felt that the 60:40 split that the last editor struck between fish tapes and fish sticks included on the list was a sensible balance, and believed that they included a healthy mix of consumer- and professional-level equipment. We did, however, decide to bump some of our superior options – like the Klein Tools 56005 and Greenlee 438-2X – a bit further up the list, recognizing that contractors are likely to favor these brand names for the reputations and warranties that they carry.

November 06, 2018:

Focused on ease of unspooling with the tape-based varieties, while also being cognizant of their ability to be low-memory. Durability was the primary concern with the rod-based options, as splintering can be a safety hazard.

After deciding that the pen was mightier than the pliers, Canadian electrical contractor William Rhoda abandoned his career and headed back to college, where he majored in marketing and advertising and won a scholarship along the way to earning a diploma in creative communications. His past career landed him a depth of knowledge in tools and hardware, while his current career schooled him in audio, video and camera equipment. During his leisure time, he’s learned lots about outdoor gear, and years of tiresome backyard maintenance have taught him all about pools and hot tubs. His recreational pursuits include rest, relaxation and revolutionary action, and his roommate’s a hairless cat.
