The 10 Best Acrylic Paint Sets
Updated by · How we research
Artist, student and craft acrylic sets compared on pigment, fading and paint for the money. The Golden Heavy Body Mixing Set leads for serious painters. When users buy our independently chosen editorial selections, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.
The word "hue" on a tube, as in Cadmium Yellow Hue, means a cheaper stand-in pigment, and it's one quick clue to what you're paying for. Artist acrylics pack more pigment and resist fading; student and craft paints give some of that up for price. These sets suit first-time painters, art students, crafters and working artists.

Editor's Notes
October 26, 2026, by Ezvid Wiki Admin:
Golden's Heavy Body Mixing Set now leads this list. It's a compact professional palette built on warm and cool primaries, and an art teacher's brand-by-brand swatch comparison put Golden first for coverage and blending. Liquitex Basics, Winsor & Newton Galeria, Grumbacher Academy, Castle Art Supplies and Apple Barrel stay, most of them in newer or bigger sets. We added Liquitex Heavy Body Classic, Arteza, Shuttle Art and Mont Marte Signature.
The Golden High Flow set can't be bought now, Creative Joy has vanished, and the DecoArt metallics belong on a craft shelf. M. Graham and Chroma Atelier are good paints, but their small sets cost too much for what's in the box and stock was thin.
The deciding evidence was each maker's lightfastness ratings and pigment codes, two painters' published brand comparisons, and the AP safety seal. If you want slower drying for blending, see our oil paint sets.
September 07, 2020:
Painting can be a relaxing hobby whether you're good at it or not, so we've made sure to keep choices for everyone, from novice to pro. We've removed The Essentials by Twinkleverse at this time, due to ongoing availability issues; newbies will want to take a look at the Castle Art Supplies or the Creative Joy 12, instead. For a very modest investment, these sets put a range of colors in your hands, and the Creative Joy set even comes with brushes, to boot. If you're going to be finishing various arts and crafts projects, the Plaid Apple Barrel 18-Piece or the DecoArt Americana Dazzling Metallics will suffice. They can be applied evenly to a range of surfaces, although you'll probably need at least a couple of coats to avoid any thin spots.
As for higher-end choices, the Golden High Flow Assorted and the Winsor & Newton Galeria are still fine options, and we've added the Chroma Atelier Interactive for those who need more versatility. Unlike other choices, these paints allow for reactivation, which makes it possible to blend them like oil paints. You'll get 12 tubes in this set, but there are plenty more colors available for separate purchase in the range.
May 22, 2019:
At this time, top names in acrylic paints still include Winsor & Newton, Golden, and Liquitex, with each making sets worthy of experienced painters and craftspeople. If you're just getting started, the Liquitex Basics is especially useful; it offers a fine array of colors for a relatively low price, so you don't need to mortgage your house just to take up a new hobby. They also offer smaller sets, so you can replenish your stash easily. For those who are under heavy budget constraints, we still like The Essentials by Twinkleverse or the Creative Joy 12. These are not as richly pigmented as many professional quality sets, but for dabblers, they should be just fine. For those just starting out but with serious intentions, we added the Grumbacher Academy, a 6-piece set that is commonly chosen by students. They mix well, offer good lightfastness, and come in high-quality tubes, all for a moderate price. Finally, we decided to keep the DecoArt Americana Dazzling Metallics. It offers shimmering colors that can bring a project to life, but you may need to use a primer and/or multiple coats to avoid a thin look.
Special Honors
Utrecht Artists' Acrylic Utrecht's own artist acrylic is sold through its stores and website rather than big marketplaces. In an art teacher's swatch comparison of more than eight brands, it was the best value among student-priced paints. Single tubes and jars make it easy to build your own palette. utrechtart.com
ACMI Certified Product Search The Art & Creative Materials Institute runs the AP and CL safety seals found on most paint sets. Its website lets parents and teachers look up which brands and products are certified before they buy, which helps with sets that only claim to be non-toxic. acmiart.org
Artist, Student And Craft Paint
That's fine for signs, rocks and school projects, not for a canvas you want to keep.
Acrylic paint is pigment held in an acrylic resin that dries to a flexible, water-resistant film. What changes from one grade to the next is mostly how much pigment is in the tube and what fills the rest. Artist paints such as Golden Heavy Body use single pigments with no fillers or matting agents, so the sheen varies from color to color. Student lines such as Liquitex Basics and Winsor & Newton Galeria use similar pigments at a lower strength, which is why pale colors can need a second coat.
Craft paint sits a step lower. An art teacher who painted the same cerulean blue swatch in more than eight brands found craft bottles chalkier and flatter, and a dollar-store paint cracked as it dried (Art Beat Box). That's fine for signs, rocks and school projects, not for a canvas you want to keep.
Watch the word "hue" in a color name. Cadmium Yellow Hue is a cheaper blend made to look like cadmium, not the real pigment. It's not a flaw, just a clue to the grade. If you want slow drying and soft blending instead, look at oil paint sets; never mix the two in one layer.
Fading, Labels And Tube Size
Fading is the hidden difference between grades. The ASTM standard for artists' paints rates lightfastness from I (Excellent) down to III, and better tubes print the rating next to the pigment code. Golden says 94 of its 101 Heavy Body colors rate Excellent and the other seven Very Good (Golden Artist Colors). Grumbacher rates every Academy color I (Grumbacher). Many cheap sets print neither number, so you can't tell what you're getting.
The pigment code, such as PB15 for phthalo blue, tells you what's really inside. It's how the art teacher above found tubes labeled cerulean that held other pigments.
Tube size matters more than color count. Small 22 ml tubes are fine for learning and small panels, but a canvas larger than a sheet of paper eats white and one or two mixing colors fast. A mixing set of a warm and cool red, yellow and blue plus white and an earth tone covers almost any color, which is how Golden built its set. A big color set saves mixing time but runs out unevenly.
Safe Painting At Home And With Kids
Look for the AP seal from the Art & Creative Materials Institute, a nonprofit that certifies art materials under the ASTM D4236 labeling standard. AP means a toxicologist found nothing in the paint harmful enough to need a warning, even for children. A CL seal means the paint is safe when you follow its printed cautions. Most student and craft acrylics carry AP, and Plaid lists the seal for Apple Barrel.
Some artist colors contain cadmium or cobalt. They're safe in normal brushwork, but don't sand, scrape or spray dried paint into dust, and don't eat or drink at the easel. Acrylic isn't body or face paint, so keep it off skin for costumes. Wipe excess paint from brushes before rinsing, and let rinse water settle so the solids can go in the trash rather than down a storm drain.
Acrylic stains clothes and carpet for good once it dries. Wash brushes while they're still wet, keep caps clean so tubes don't seal shut, and seal outdoor craft pieces with a varnish made for acrylic.
How we researched this
We compared 17 acrylic paint sets, read the makers' color charts, pigment codes and lightfastness ratings for the 10 finalists, weighed two painters' published brand comparisons and long-run owner feedback, checked safety seals, and checked every brand against U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalls. Frequently asked questions
Is acrylic paint non-toxic?
Most student and craft acrylics carry the AP seal, meaning they're certified non-toxic under the ASTM D4236 labeling standard. Still, don't eat or drink while painting, don't sand dried paint into dust, and don't use it as face or body paint.
What is the difference between student and artist acrylic paint?
Artist paint holds more pigment and usually lists a lightfastness rating for each color. Student paint uses similar pigments at lower strength, often with "hue" blends for costly colors, so it costs less but can need extra coats.
How many colors do I need to start?
Fewer than most sets include. A warm and cool red, yellow and blue, plus white and an earth tone such as burnt sienna, can mix nearly any color. Buy extra white; it runs out first.
Why does acrylic paint look darker when it dries?
The binder looks milky when wet and turns clear as it dries, so colors shift a little darker. The shift tends to be larger in student and craft paints. Mix a touch lighter than you want.
Can I use craft paint like Apple Barrel on canvas?
Yes, for practice and decorations. Craft paint has less pigment and more filler, so it dries flatter and can fade sooner. Use artist or student paint for work you plan to keep or sell.
Is acrylic paint waterproof?
Once dry, it's water-resistant and won't rinse off. Indoor craft paint needs a clear sealer for outdoor pieces. Clean brushes before the paint dries, since dried acrylic won't wash out.
