There are a few ways the devices on this list achieve automatic garage door closing. The more sophisticated models, such as the Tailwind iQ3 and the Garadget GRT1US, detect when your vehicle drives up or away from your garage and will open or close the door. The former scans for a car's Bluetooth system while the latter uses mounted laser sensors. Out of the two, it seems that using Bluetooth most reliably detected the proximity of a vehicle, and that is reflected in our ranking.
The Tailwind also has a cool night mode that will shut the door after five minutes of it being opened once it gets dark.
Models that support IFTTT can use geofencing, which is slightly different method. Geofencing is the creation of a virtual perimeter in a real-world geographic area. So for example, with the Chamberlain MyQ Smart Hub -- after paying a monthly fee -- you can trigger your garage door to close when your phone, and presumably you, are at a prescribed distance away from it.
But that's not all. There is also time-based automation, which differs in two ways. Some models, like the Skylink GT-100A and Meross Smart, allow a user to set a timer that will countdown once a garage door has been opened and by the end will close the door.
On the other hand, the Genie Aladdin Connect is great for the punctual among us, as it lets you schedule when your garage door opens and closes.
All of these devices work in conjunction with a garage door opener, and you'll want to look into compatibility before making a purchase.
