Editor's Notes

May 18, 2020:

While baseball caps can help keep sweat and sun out of your eyes, they are geared more towards fashion than function, and therefore only offer a limited amount of protection from UV rays. If you’re going to be exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time and are concerned about skin health, heat stroke, and other dangers, you should consider more serious solutions such as sun hats, suglasses and sunscreen in order to shield yourself appropriately. If you’re feeling ostentatious, you could even consider using a parasol for cover. No matter how you cut it, the sun is a star that is literally bombarding everything on Earth with radiation, so UV protection should be taken seriously. As ever, we believe it is always best to consult your primary physician and/or relevant authorities when it comes to your personal health.

While each of the hats on our list has six panels, ventilation holes, and button tops, what really sets them apart are things like material composition, sizing options, and superficial appearance. Synthetic designs like the Under Armour Blitzing and Flexfit Athletic are just as popular and well made as models crafted from cotton such as the Carhartt Odessa and Falari Classic. The main differences between these two approaches are that natural cotton models tend to breathe better, while synthetic acrylic and polyester models are generally more durable and water resistant. What sort of weather you are regularly exposed to should help lead your hat hunt, as synthetic designs will fare better in cold and wet conditions, while natural designs are better suited to the hot and dry. More goes into it, and how much you sweat, as well as how often you might have to wash your hat, definitely matter.
