The 7 Best CR2032 Batteries

Illustration of the 5 CR2032 coin cell batteries to scale, next to a bike tail light and an item tracker for size

Seven CR2032 coin cells compared on independent runtime tests, child safety and AirTag fit. The Panasonic CR2032 leads for long life and a wide heat rating. When users buy our independently chosen editorial picks, we may earn commissions to help fund the Wiki.

Every CR2032 is a 3-volt lithium coin about the size of a nickel, yet independent runtime tests find that a no-name cell can quit in about half the time of a good one. That matters in car key fobs, AirTags, kitchen scales and computer motherboards. This guide is for anyone restocking spares who wants long-lasting cells in child-resistant packs.

Editor's Notes

October 22, 2026, by Ezvid Wiki Admin:

Panasonic CR2032 leads this new page because its cells ran the longest in a months-long data-logger trial of 10 brands, and Panasonic backs them with a current, detailed datasheet. The surprise was Voniko CR2032, a budget brand that finished within a few percent of it in the same trial.

We built the list from the makers' datasheets, half a dozen independent CR2032 runtime trials by engineers, hobbyists and European consumer groups, CPSC recall notices and patterns in owner feedback. We left out a Maxell 20-pack because its outside seller had only a couple left and its photos showed the wrong battery, and we skipped sellers the CPSC has recalled for packaging that wasn't child-resistant.

If an AirTag goes quiet after a battery swap, a bitter coating may be the reason. Energizer 2032 and Duracell 2032 both use one, and they're still the picks for homes with toddlers.

Special Honors

Varta CR2032 The German maker Varta did well in European consumer tests of CR2032 cells, posting the best result in Test Achats' intermittent trial. Varta coin cells are easy to find in European stores but scarce in U.S. retail, so they're worth knowing if you're traveling or ordering from a distributor. varta-ag.com

Brand, Freshness And What The Runtime Tests Show

Panasonic lasted about 1,500 hours, Voniko and Maxell close behind, Energizer and Duracell about 1,300, ACDelco about 1,220, and a no-name cell about 640.

A CR2032 is a 3-volt lithium manganese dioxide coin cell, 20 millimeters across and 3.2 millimeters thick, and every maker builds to the same IEC size code. What differs is how much usable energy is inside and how well it holds up under bursts of current. The best long test we found is the Cave Pearl Project, which ran 10 brands in data loggers drawing a tiny current with a pulse every minute. Panasonic lasted about 1,500 hours, Voniko and Maxell close behind, Energizer and Duracell about 1,300, ACDelco about 1,220, and a no-name cell about 640. A batch of fake "Sony" cells ran as badly as the no-name ones.

Pulse loads widen the gap. A Texas Instruments study of wireless-sensor loads found some cells, including branded ones, delivered only about half their rated capacity, while Sony and Panasonic came close to 100 percent at moderate peaks. Belgian consumer group Test Achats tested 15 brands in 2025 and found the cheapest store brand gave up more than half the energy of the better cells.

Freshness matters as much as the name. Lithium coin cells lose only about 1 to 2 percent a year in storage, but stale or counterfeit stock is common online. Maxell Europe measured counterfeit CR2032s at roughly 55 to 65 percent of rated capacity. Buy from the maker's own storefront or a busy store, check the date code, and buy a pack size you'll use within a few years.

AirTags, Key Fobs And Which Cells Fit

Apple's AirTag battery page warns that CR2032 cells with a bitter coating might not work, depending on where the coating sits against the contacts. Duracell coats both faces of its cells, and Energizer adds bitterant on its Child Shield packs (Energizer). If a tag won't chime after a swap, try an uncoated cell rather than scraping the coating off, which can damage the contacts.

Key fobs, scales, glucose meters and motherboard clocks draw so little power that any fresh, genuine cell will do for years. Fobs and tire sensors that live in a car need the wider heat rating: Panasonic's datasheet runs to 85 C, while Energizer's datasheet stops at 60 C.

Codes on cells marked DL2032, ECR2032 and KCR2032 are the same cell under other names. A BR2032 fits too, but it uses a different chemistry with less capacity, suited to extreme temperatures. A CR2025 has the same width but is 2.5 millimeters thick, so it can rattle or lose contact in a CR2032 slot; see our CR2025 battery picks if your device takes the thinner cell. The 1.5-volt LR44 is a different battery altogether (LR44 picks).

Child Safety, Storage And Disposal

A swallowed coin cell can burn through a child's throat in as little as two hours, so treat any suspected swallow as an emergency and go to the ER at once. The National Capital Poison Center runs a battery ingestion hotline at 800-498-8666 and explains when honey can help on the way for children over a year old. Don't induce vomiting.

Reese's Law, enforced by the CPSC since 2023, requires child-resistant packaging and warning labels on coin cells, and secure battery doors on the devices that use them. The agency keeps recalling sellers whose packs fall short, including LiCB's CR2032 cells in 2026 (CPSC recall). Every pack on this page is sold in child-resistant packaging.

Keep spares in their card until you need them, away from keys and coins that can short them. CR2032 cells are not rechargeable, so never try to charge, heat or crush one. When a cell is spent, tape both faces and take it to a battery drop-off; the EPA explains why lithium cells don't belong in household trash.

How we researched this

We compared 15 CR2032 packs from 12 brands, read the datasheets for Panasonic, Energizer, Duracell, Maxell and Murata cells, weighed half a dozen independent runtime trials, analyzed owner feedback for patterns, and checked every brand against CPSC recall notices. The 3D models are built from published dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

What brand of CR2032 battery lasts the longest?

In the longest independent trial we found, Panasonic cells ran the longest, with Voniko and Maxell close behind and Energizer and Duracell about 13 percent shorter. Under heavier pulse loads, Duracell has also done well. A fresh, genuine cell matters more than the brand.

Are all CR2032 batteries the same?

They share the same size and 3-volt rating, so any CR2032 fits. They differ in real capacity, temperature rating, bitter coatings and packaging, and cheap no-name cells have run about half as long as good ones in independent tests.

Can I use a CR2025 instead of a CR2032?

Only in a pinch. A CR2025 is the same width but thinner, so it can lose contact, and it holds less energy. Use the size your device names.

Why won't my AirTag work with a new CR2032?

Apple says cells with a bitter coating may not work, depending on how the coating lines up with the contacts. Try an uncoated cell, and don't scrape the coating off.

Are CR2032 batteries rechargeable?

No. The rechargeable LIR2032 is a different 3.6-volt cell, and it shouldn't go in a device built for a CR2032 unless the maker says so.

What should I do if a child swallows a coin battery?

Go to the emergency room at once and call the battery ingestion hotline at 800-498-8666 on the way. Don't induce vomiting. Damage can start within two hours.
