It shrugs off rough handling, carries as a backpack and keeps muddy gear apart from clean clothes. Only one of the ten earlier picks survives. The Osprey Transporter 130, Under Armour Undeniable 4.0 and Herschel Supply Co. Novel are no longer available, so the Osprey Transporter 65 and Under Armour Undeniable 5.0 step in for the first two. We also dropped the Ruzioon Retro Carry-On, Fila Acer, Samsonite Tote-A-Ton, Adidas Defender III, Gonex Waterproof and Rothco Parachute Cargo, because we couldn't find current evidence that they hold up. The most useful evidence came from outdoor reviewers who drag duffels on desert bike trips and to Antarctica, then spray them with a hose or hold them underwater. The rest of our recommendations remain the same. The Osprey Transporter 130 is one of the most thoughtfully designed, which is no surprise from an functionality-focused company like Osprey. The Under Armour Undeniable 4.0 offers a great balance of durability and style, while the Gonex Waterproof represents a full investment in protection from the elements. If you're looking for something that's simple and large, the Samsonite Tote-A-Ton is hard to beat, and if stylish is your thing, consider the vintage-styled Ruzioon Retro Carry-On.

Duffle bags have been used since the 17th century and are often found on the shoulders of military service personnel thanks to their reliable design and overall ruggedness. Of course, as with all forms of luggage, they have evolved over time and are no longer only available in a basic cotton or canvas design with limited, if any, pockets. We wanted to make sure our list encompassed the many forms of duffle bags out there, so while you'll still find that basic canvas option here, specifically the tough Rothco Parachute Cargo, we have also included a wide variety of other models that boast more modern features.
The Osprey Transporter 130, which can accommodate a ton of stuff, is both a backpack and duffle, making it ideal for a variety of use. When fully loaded, you'll appreciate the well-padded dual shoulder straps, and multiple grab handles make it easy to toss onto or retrieve from all forms of transportation. The Travelpro Bold is another versatile option. It features wheels and a telescoping handle, just like rolling suitcases, yet can also be carried slung across a shoulder. It also fully unzips, allowing for convenient packing and unpacking.

How Big A Duffel Do You Need?

Duffel and duffle are the same bag, spelled two ways. The name comes from Duffel, a Belgian town known for a thick wool cloth (Wikipedia). Capacity is given in liters, and OutdoorGearLab offers a simple guide: about 20 to 40 liters for the gym or a short trip, 40 to 60 liters for a long weekend up to a week, and more than 60 liters for bulky gear or long trips. Big bags are easy to overpack, and a soft bag full of heavy items is hard to lift, so OutdoorGearLab suggests filling a large duffel with bulky things rather than heavy ones.
If you plan to fly with it, check the airline before you buy. American Airlines caps carry-ons at 22 by 14 by 9 inches, handles and wheels included, and other U.S. carriers use similar limits. Packhacker notes that a duffel of about 45 liters can already run past U.S. domestic carry-on limits when it's full. A 55- or 60-liter duffel is a checked bag on most flights, and basic economy fares often allow only a personal item.
Water-Resistant Is Not Waterproof
Most travel duffels use a coated fabric, often a TPU laminate, that sheds rain and wipes clean. That isn't the same as waterproof. In CleverHiker's hose and rain tests, the Gregory Alpaca took on water at the base, the Nemo Double Haul kept gear less dry than coated bags, and only fully sealed bags such as the Yeti Panga survived being held underwater. Water-repellent finishes on bags like the Carhartt Utility and Under Armour Undeniable help in a drizzle, not a downpour.
True dry bags have a price: they're stiff, heavy and slower to pack, with narrow openings and few pockets. For most trips a coated duffel is enough. If rain is likely and your bag isn't sealed, CleverHiker suggests packing clothes and electronics in water-resistant stuff sacks inside it. Save the dry bag for rafts, boat decks and open truck beds.
Wheels, Straps And Fabric
Wheels help on pavement and with heavy loads, but they add weight and struggle on gravel, sand and snow, according to OutdoorGearLab. A wheeled duffel also gives up the squashable shape that lets a soft bag fit into a car trunk or under a seat. Backpack straps are the better choice if you'll walk a long way with the bag, through a train station or to a trailhead. Look for padded straps that tuck away, so they don't snag on airport conveyors.
Fabric tells you a lot about how a bag will age. Packhacker explains that ripstop weaves stop small tears from spreading, ballistic nylon is very tough but heavy, and TPU coatings add water resistance. Higher denier numbers mean thicker yarn, though weave and coating matter too. Check the zippers: Packhacker recommends large, sturdy zippers, at least YKK size 5 on outer pockets. Reinforced bases, D-shaped openings that fold back wide and compression straps that cinch a half-full bag are worth having.
